So about a month ago I was in Madison leaving MATC (tech school) and as I turn onto a main road i see a cop at the stoplight adjacent to me. I then of course obeyed all laws like a good person giving him no reason to pull me over as they like to.
However at this time my truck was smoking a lot (blue smoke not black) and i had wondered how long it would be before i got pulled over.
Well Im sitting at a stoplight and hes 3 cars behind me. The light turns green and he shoots up behind me.
He comes up to my truck furious asking if I knew why he pulled me over. I said probably because of the smoke, he goes off saying my truck cant be doing that blah blah.
I said i am uncertain at the time right now but i am working on fixing it. He said what does that mean, i replied that it was most likely due to the slightly lower compression ratio and larger turbo and was just something i neded to workout in the tuning, but it does clean up when it gets warm.
He then says, "wait you have parts on this that arent from the factory".
Yes.
He goes off saying how its illegal to put anything on a vehicle that isnt installed by the factory. WHOA!!!! HOLD ON!!!.
Usually i try to play nice, but this turned on the the asshole side of me.
At this point he asks for my license. I had lost my wallet at the time, but the folks at the DMV told me to keep my occupational license to have as a backup if needed. I hand it to him saying, Its not my actual license but its what i have.(in wisconsin you dont actually have to carry your license, its just for convienece). He goes off about how its an occupational one and im out of my driving time, i said, officer I just told you its not my actual current license, look at the date, i have a regular license now.
I start by asking if my mirrors were illegal as they are from an 06 truck and mine is an 03. He asked if they were put on by the manufacturer, I said no i put them on because they are nicer and safer. He said i cant do that they are illegal.
He then went off about the "pipe in my bed" and how he knows thats not from teh factory, uhh gee you think.
I then become an annoying nit pick and say," according to what your telling me my door badges are illegal because they are from an 06 truck as well and say Duramax/Allison vs Duramax Diesel. he says yes technically they are illegal.
Wow what an ass.
He then takes a walk around the back of the truck and then comes back furious again. 'What happened to your bumper, how come its not there, you cant have that cobblejob back there, there is no flat spot for a car to hit".
I said, first off its not a cobble job I put a lot of time into it, and 2nd it has a flat spot, do you see those two bars sticking up and down, theres your flat spot, much better than a vehicle with a roll pan or even a car. He said, well you have that big loop thing sticking out and that could cause damage to their car. With all due respect officer, they would be the ones hitting me, so its not my problem, and 2nd if they are rearending me, stuff is gonne get messed up no matter what, and 3rd its no different than me having the factory hitch with a ball in it.
He then walks up front and sees my weight bracket and again points that out asking me what it is for. I said its for hanging weights out front, and of course he says its illegal. I catch a glimpse of a truck with a brush gard in my mirror and say, its no different than that guys truck.
By now I think hes starting to realize I have an answer to everything and he says, this truck disgusts me and it shouldnt even be allowed on the road ever again.
He then says Im gonna go back and look in the book and see what can find, I said you wont find anything. He says he is positive because no vehicle should smoke like that, I explain that pre 07 diesels in wisconsin are exempt from emissions, he says Im wrong and goes back.
45 minutes goes by and im freezing my ass off at this point and wondering WTF. A few thoughts run through my head,
1. A tow truck is on the way to get my truck and hes taking me in for obstructing justice.
2. Im right and hes just not finding anything.
Well finally another 10 minutes later he walks up with a ticket in hand.
He starts explaining it saying it is for malfunctioning emissions controls systems.
Imediately I say, no way hold on a second here. I explained to you, this truck is exempt from all emissions rules you cant right me this ticket. I said there is no emissiosn controls on my vehicle.
He then says, wait you removed your catylitic converter? I said no there was never one on there from the factory. He says no, your lying every vehicle has one. I reply with, you need to go back to traffic school and learn more about emissions laws and maybe become DOT certified so you can legally write me this ticket.(In WI only DOT certified officers can write tickets pertaining to vehicles components, I.E. off road fuel, emissions etc. typically only State Patrol Guys are DOT certified). He says I can tell the judge that.
He then throws they, 'Your Ruining the Environment" Card. And goes off about global warming.
WHOA HOLD ON A SECOND. Now I get smart again and say your probably talikng about C02 right? He says yes. I say, well your car is putting out a lot more CO2 sitting there idling than my truck ever will.
He has nothing and just says well that me be so do you have any more questions. I reply no just seems like a big waste of both of ours time. He says well then have a nice day.
So I was supposed to go "fix" my truck and get it emmisions checked. However I asked a lot of people and nobody knew where one of these places was around here.
Otherwise I was just supposed to battle it in court.
Well now I f-ed. How am I supposed to get it emissions checked by May 2nd with the motor in pieces.
Sounds like I will be going to court and explaining this mess. i was also told by many to report the cop as well.
If I find one of these emissions places I may be able to send them my VIN and have them sign off that it is indeed exempt, but im not crossing my fingers.
In court i still stand the chance of loosing and paying the $160.
