Fuel Balance Rates

I understand why the rate goes up, but would that be the injectors that are bad causing the fluctuation, or the pressure regulator. But while driving and towing the truck seems to run fin and the mileage is normal.

The fuel rate is just the average of all 8 injectors, so that average will fluctuate around as the injected amount varies per cylinder. It should hold within a .5-1mm3 of fuel, but if your balance rates are fluctuating around, then your fuel rate will as well.

I have a 2005 and have been having some white smoke only when warm in drive at stop lights. I checked the balance rates and got some really off numbers, I know supposed to be +-4 in park and 6 in drive, but have one side all positive and the other all negative.

1 -7
2 6.5
3-6.9
4 4.3
5 -6.8
6 12.2
7 -3
8 .5

I figure 6 is done and needs replacing, but was going to do the injector cleaning, but not sure how so many can be off, but truck runs good and smooth when not a idle.

Bringing this back up to show how knowing the fuel rate changes things. The rate should be 8-9, and he said he has 15-16, so we need to subtract 6 to get corrected numbers. Corrected numbers look DRASTICALLY different than displayed.
1.-1
2.12.5
3.-.9
4.10.3
5.-.8
6.18.2
7.3
8.6.5

The corrected numbers look completely different. The part that would worry me is how the drivers bank are all good and close to each other, but the passenger side is way off. I would not expect to see such a bank to bank difference unless debris got into that fuel rail.

Was wondering if clogged, which I am hoping the injector cleaner process may help with or pressure regulator? Just don't want to spend the money on 8 injectors, not fix the problem and possible mess up the new injectors.

With those numbers, I would be pulling the drivers side rail off, and checking it for metal. From your balance rates, you may only need the 4 on the drivers side, but with them being so all over the place, who knows. Whatever you do, check your fuel system before putting new parts in. Would hate for you to have a cp3 goung oit dumping metal into the rails, and your new injectors get trashed and not be warranty.

Will do that going to run the cleaner this weekend, not sure how enough trash would get in the rail, but will check. Just changed the filter two weeks ago hoping that was the issue. Also looking at doing the CAT filter mod, figure a better filter would be good, and cheaper never hurts.

The CAT filter has no water removal, if you have a lift pump with a water removal filter you're OK. The stock type Parker/Racor PFF50216 is you're best all around filter in the stock position. I use the Nicktane adapter with a Donaldson P553203 for other reasons. Nicktane has a ongoing sale, just put MADEINUSA at checkout...

My truck fuel cell is filtered, and the truck is filtered, I can't get over 7k out of a filter, I've cut the last two filters apart and the black stuff is nasty

You have some algae growing in your tank or where you purchase from does, maybe a refinery issue with ashpaltenes or both (algae)?

Yeah, some of my fuel come from a nasty old tank, I argued with the Rig manager about getting the tank scrubbed but they didn't want to spend the money

Well today had a friend that knows Duramax and told me to unplug my edge and the engine ran smoother. Also found that there was an update and did that, and then plugged the edge back in. Now I am at just two sitting at a +6 and another at -6. Still going to clean the injectors and run it a few days to see how this shakes out.

Got to love one of those days so while trying to do the injector cleaning had the wrong size fuel line toll, had to drive to town (15 min each way). Got home still could not get the line off, then went to SEARS (a little closer) to get different fuel line tool. Got home after some work got the fuel line off. Got hoses on, mixed up cleaner, went to prime the filter and bleed screw broke. No one in town has one so ordered from Amazon so I can get the metal one.

On a better note as I change programs in my edge the injectors that are bad keep changing. They are better after I upgraded the firmware, and now only three are out reading 7.3 and 6.2 but different ones and the one that was +14 is only +2.4 and truck is running better, so convinced it has something to do with the edge.

Ok so ran the cleaner thru and very little improvement removed the edge no improvment so working on changing the injectors, and got them all out. 5 had a black grunge on them, and thinking I got bad gas in norther AZ (in the middle of nowhere my mistake) and thinking this is the problem. Now I am worried this is throughout my system, but replaced filter, and ran the cleaner, so not sure what is up. Also found a broken o ring on one injector.

Black grunge on the tip or the bodies? The o-ring is just there to keep dirt and grim from packing around the injector. The copper seal on the tip is what keeps the fire in the hole.

There was actually black grim on the tip. I see where the o ring keeps it out, but the tip had a bunch on it on a few. Still trying to figure out how to clean out the hole so it does not go in while installing the new injectors.

Those injectors were probably not firing properly. I use a shop vac and compressed air on a long blow nozzle to clean the bores out. A long thin flat blade screw driver can help remove stubborn particles.
