Pistons

Nope. No problems at all. Stock held up(LBZ). Now the Arias seem to be doing good also. For what it's worth I think most piston problems stem from high heat (cycles) over time. More heat less time, high heat short time failures. Jeff

Has anyone here had any issues with the aftermarket cast or forged pistons in there d-max?

Melting?

Cracking?

Deforming?

i had 23,000 miles on mine and no cracking or melting and no deforming. ring lands looked great and they were checked by arias. dynoed over 700 and track time was over 800 hp with fisrt time tuning with new injectors.

What were your track times?

I think Gale B. made a note on them that he thought it was because of the N2O. This does make the fire more intense.

He was also using the mahle pistons, IMO there second fidle to a true forged piston with better material to handle more psi and heat....

I have also heard that gale was using CNG, propane, among other things to keep up with just one cp3....... jeff barker has said that they do not use this stuff, but it makes you wonder considering that nos dont hurt a cummins at all when tuned right!!!

When I was talking with Ross they has a set of stock LBZ pistons that Banks had played with and they were having Ross make them a set the same as the one they sent them.

I have to respectfully disagree with the above statement.

Mahle "forged" pistons are some of the most technically advanced pistons in the world. Used by many Nascar Cup, Formula 1, and Lemans teams.

When you compare the engineering capability/capacity between Mahle (a world wide company) and the other manufacturers (20-30 employees each, located in the U.S.) it isn't even close.

Thats cool, i think that when you factor in the ability to redesign and fine tune a piston to fit your needs a smaller company is allways more willing to help, also you cant argue with the cost difference, and material difference--it's not a one size fits all world. one other side is that not one of the top guys in top fuel or alcohol, or even pro mod engines are useing mahle pistons to my knowledge, and there heat and cylinder psi are higher that any of our diesel engines have seen so far in drag racing.

I dont know, i think that there is more than one good piston out there for diesels. Ross i know has made some very high hp 2500hp+ tractor puller pistons alone with a few others.

BTW the lemans cars are bad to the bone....

Some Ross pistons have split. One in the Northeast and Daves Diesel killed a basket full of them. For my money Mahle or Arias. Arias are a good bit less $$$$.
