Few Questions

Okay so Ive been brainstorming and benchracing lately and have decided on two things to do with the new motor im picking up from Tim.

1: slowly build it the way I want it with all of the stops pulled out.

2: do a budget build and swap it in for this season, and build the motor in my truck currenty the way I like it.

Now my questions are for option 2.

Heres what I have bench raced, correct it or add to it as you wish.

Delipped LB7 pistons (need a price on this PM me if you will thanks)

Howards rods (maybe nicks rods??? Dont know much about them or the cost)

ARP head studs

SoCal damper (is this even needed for this build??)

GT4202 turbo

Volkers DIY Twin CP3 kit (if its available) using both of the LB7 cp3s.

60% injectors

BD full bore manifold

now what did I miss or what should I do differently.

thanks in advance guys.

BTW: If I dont decide to do a budget build I will just be running a GT4202 on my current motor for pulling this season. No other mods, just the GT4202.

IMHO if your looking to put on a big turbo with no other mods...you are going to have to rush that nice build. also IMO, garretts are overpriced even compared to a one-off turbo that has better specs...

i wasnt going to use PPEs kit, I was going to use their install kit and find a cheap journal bearing 4202.

I could spend a little more on some MPI twins. That was a possiblilty.

I dont know how well the stock motor will hold up to the 4202. I plan to keep the fueling system stock if I keep the motor stock.

then wouldnt you have to worry about not giving the charger enough fuel to work properly, seems very inefficient especially if you are pulling, you would be in a big turbo class with no fuel to spin it

I know of a Lb7 that did a stock motor/gt4202 with head studs and dual fuelers...it held together for half a season and did rather well. However, the motor is yet to be pulled apart to see what condition the rods are in.

If you do a budget build on the engine you are about to buy, then install it and slowly build your current engine once it is out, you will have to buy rods and what not twice. Do it once and do it right.

wasnt sure If I could take advantage of the 4202 or not.

the rules around here are unlimited single, 3.0 twins(bushings allowed) and now open driveline.

So i want to get the most I can without blowing it up right away. Just needs to hold out long enough until the nice build is done. I should be able to get the money for the nice build, but not in time for this season especailly with teh economy in the crapper, its a little harder for the sponsors to dump money into a sponsorship.

originally thats what I wanted to do is do it once do it right. But Liek I stated, dont think I can get it done in time and the class I will be running in is very powerful. It may end up finished halfway through the season. so Maybe I should just run the stock motor with a bigger charger. Twin CP3s on a stock motor scare me as I tend to get carried away with tuning.

Can you put the gt4202 on your truck...YES

Should you knowing full well you cannot afford to fix it the way you WANT it done...NO.

Would I try it....YES because I am less than capable of making good decisions. Play your cards right, and come up with a solution that best fits your needs and you just might end up with a spare motor without holes in it.

i never make good choices.

Frankly I dont know which turbo to run as I plan to run Nathans big twins on the "nice" motor when its done since you need to bring alot to our class.

no matter what I do I am wasting money, bnut If I show up with a stock truck with just tuning and a boost valve im still wasting time and money.

You might be waisting money going to play with the big boys with only tuning and a boost valve but atleast you should have a better chance of leaving with the block in one piece. Not to bust your chops or anything but I am having this same issue as well and it helps to look at the bigger picture. Perhaps even look at it like this, no matter what you bring to the show, you will never get your investment back. Sled pulling is a lose lose situation if you are just looking at it from an income standpoint. Spend within your means, and have a good time. Best of luck to you, I am sure I will run across your path sometime in the future. :D

oh Ive known sled pulling is the worst investement since I was 10 and wanted to be a puller, I learned quicker when I turned 12 and started pulling.

However I do have quite a few sponsors so far

and the issue is that you have to look good and keep them happy.

however fortunately so far the sponsors I have dont care if I place last everyhook, they just wanna help out.

But no matter what they say I still wanna try to make them look even better.

i would go with a nice S400 and start off with a 2.6 and when you build your motor you can just swap a few parts on the turbo to make it 3" or whatever you want

so that should get me the best bang for buck without killing the motor??

Remember there are no rules on single turbo size. But I do like the S400s price and how many parts are available.

I like your idea of running a GT42 with a single cp3, Still might want to go with a spec'd out S400 though

I would say Crower Rods from guy. $2699 Nicks are off the market and the Howards don't have the track record that the Crowers do.

De-lipped new LB7 pistons run $1900

If you are spinning it fast enough to need the damper you need the valve springs too IMO.

S400 sounds like the best turbo option for you.

Don't forget to budget for all the little stuff like head gaskets, bearings, other gaskets, ect. - they add up quick and will put you over budget if you don't plan for them.

If you can I would try to run the stock motor and build the spare to the hilt if you plan to have a motor built that way eventually anyway.
