Just got the fender scoop added for more cold air, also added the Volant Intake "wrapped the tube in header wrap", sealed off the inner fender to keep hot engine compartment air out of the intake and will be adding the Volant Lower intake scoop as soon as the UPS guy brings it. I dogged it fairly hard at lunch today in stop and go traffic and I couldn't get the Big fan to come on, So I they this was a worthwhile mod. IAT's are way down, averaging less than 10 degrees above outside temperature on the highway and only 20 - 25 deg. above outside temp in heavy stop and go traffic.

While the fender scoop is cut into the fender, only the outer surface was removed, there is still middle section still intact which vents downward and has several smallis holes in the middle areas. The scoop is moved back far enough that I hope not to suck in water when it rains, it looks to be protected. I'll find out later in the week, "rain is coming".

My understanding is that with the inner sections sealed off, and I used reflective dynomat to do this, a pressurized cold air source has been created.
The last photo kinda shows how the interior should be protected from rain.

Ups guy just dropped off the lower scoop, that will go on tonite. :D

Nice stuff Larry!

I was thinking of something similiar to this only casting a scoop out front, in the fog light portal, and "plumbing" it through the inner fender then into the bottom of the filter housing.

What you have is very clean. Where did you get this again? from KILLERBEE?

I got that covered too, My Volant lower scoop just arrived and it is actually set up the way you are describing. As an after thought, and somebody eles's advice, I am considering wrapping the intake box in reflective thermo wrap to further help with IAT's.

LOOKS GOOD LARRY! Is there a vent on the other side to make things look even?
Not at the moment, BUT, I am considering getting another scoop and just turning it around to vent out the hot under hood air. I'm not sure though if there would be enough flow for that to work as intended.

Larry, I have an idea for anymore additional piping (custom stuff you can't buy like larger turbo inlets, your idea.....) you may want to do underhood. I haven't done it in awhile but it goes like this. Call your buddy the commercial electrican (if you know one) or go to a large equipment rental shop, and tell them you want a 4-6" pipe heater.... Any body tried this before? More detail required?

Wasn't this being done 2 years ago by GM for the '05 overheaters? Chris probably would know.

It looks pretty mean from the right side. and matching the left will look good. even a little bit of hot air flow out from the engine wont hurt.

Is that vent from a marine application, Larry? It looks very familiar.:)

If you put the driverside on turned around it might work good but there is still the inner part of the fender that would restrict the out-flow of hot air. A cowl style hood might work better for getting rid of hot underhood air.

I wonder how a NACA scoop would work for this? May give it a clean look also. And for those wondering what a NACA scoop is (I couldnt remember what it was called and had to look it up ) here is a picture of a Ferrari with what I am talking about

I have several varieties of NACA's in the archive failure pile. I could never manage to get enough flow at our relatively slow speeds on grade. They work well in high speed applications where high volume AND pressure is not needed, and aerodynamic preservation is paramount. For sheer volume requirements sometimes exceeding 1000 scfm, the NACA wouldn't get anywhere close. If the opening were 2"x4", the air would have to enter at 204 mph to satisfy the whole task. Then there is the fender substructure interference.

I was never thrilled with the appearance for this effort. The NACA must be mouted rearward, further from the intake, and that reduces some of the effectiveness, unless you make the fender air tight.

Just some of what I learned. Larry, looks great in red.

Looks good Larry. How does it work in the rain??

Where's the pics Simon??

You should do the same thing as Larry but use a forced air furnace floor register!! To keep the same theme LOL
