Are you sure the turbo is shot? I would be hard pressed to start throwing parts at it without a good diagnosis.

It could still be the tuning even if you put the switch in the "stock" position. The "stock position" is not what the factory programmed into the truck. Your tuner has to go through a few steps to load the custom DSP5 tune into the truck. The factory tune is erased and your tuner puts his own version of "stock" into that slot. Something as simple as scripting the DSP5 tune without changing calibration units (C* or F*,etc.) can cause these issues.

When the tuner reads the factory tune out of the truck it loads in the EfiLive software in metric, most peoples scripts in the us are written in Imperial. If he forgets to change the units to imperial the truck can act like this, usually it is more of a constant problem not random though. Just food for thought...

When I went back to him to log it, I did have him change a shift point and it was in kilometers and confused him, then hew adjusted that but didn't do anything anywhere else.... excellent input, thank you. One thing tho, I saw his tables (didn't understand much) and saw where it says it calls for 32 lb boost and it won't get over 24. And it does whine higher pitches and louder than others I hear....

And, he didn't pull the factory tune out of it, we didn't have history and know if it was factory. He said he pulled it based off vin

Don't put the after market turbo on with your stock trans. First it can produce a lot more power than your trans will handle. Second the idiot tuning your truck can't get it right with a stock turbo what makes you think he will get it right with an after market one.

it is metal, but i'm going to use this as an excuse to do the turbo, then i'm going to be having someone else do the tune. keeping it conservative til the time comes when i can do the tranny (probably 6-8 months out)

While he is doing the turbo he we are going to do the legit egr delete, and while he has all the extra crap off he is going to go a little further and just give everything a good looking through since me doing it would be pointless.....

also, his response to the "we can't change shift points" he said that was his standard answer cause people ask for it and don't even know what they want. To which i pointed out that i was paying for a tune on my truck, not paying for what he feels like tuning. Then i told him i was going to just say eff it and get tuning from idahorob and he got all but hurt and told me some story about how rob is the one who got him into tuning in 08 even tho he beat rob that year at the championships...

I have Autometer EGt and Boost gauges on my column. The boost is tapped on the up, right before it flattens out and on top... not sure if thats relevant but thought i would throw it out there.

You and possibly your "tuner" have a lot to learn. The desired boost tables are total boost plus atmospheric pressure. So say you barometric pressure is 13.4 than you have to take that off the desired boost table.

I know you want to throw another turbo on it but I really think you would be surprised at what your truck could do with the stock turbo and correct combo of parts. Build the trans first along with a lift pump and proper tuning. That would put you over 500 hp to the ground. You start putting after market turbos on then they spool slower and you get into the area where you are able to kill the motor. It is your truck and you are free to do as you wish. There are guys in this thread that have been around the block already trying to help with some good advice.

I know i have a lot to learn, pretty much an idiot when it comes to diesels, and more and more heading towards my tuner knows about the same amount....

Lift pump arrived the other day, doing it mid next week.

How do i find out if my turbo is in fact the problem for sure?

One way to check some of the condition is to pull your intake and check to see if the impeller moves in or out and also if it has scraped against the cover. Without oil pressure it will move side to side a little bit but should not be excessive. It should have no in and out movement.
