Hi guys just waiting for my autometer exhaust temp guage to arrive and was wondering were to mount the probe before the turbo or in the down pipe also what is the maximum exhaust temp not to be exceeded that is the temp if the probe is mounted before the turbo and the temp if mounted in down pipe?

I mounted mine in the passenger side exhaust manifold. It is on the "hot side" or pre-turbo, the hot side will give you the most accurate reading.....as far as temp, most say 1350-1400* hot side and 1150-1200* cold side (post-turbo).

he nailed it. the pass side is easiest to get at. just remove the wheel and fender liner, uses a 21/64 drill bit and an 1/8NPT tap, most guys do it at the rear of the manifold near where the upipe connects.

On my last truck I did the Pass. side drill-and-tap method. On my current truck I did the BD manifold on the Driver's side which already has a spot for the probe. I'm not sure one way is any better (or worse) than the other. Drilling and tapping the manifold on the motor kind of sucked, but replacing the manifold on the other side was no easier. (which was the main reason I tried it on this truck) Others may have differing opinions, but I think it's about the same either way.

The reason for pass side is because stock manifold on drivers side is restrictive and would be a little hotter.

make sure you grease the tap so shavings stick to it.

you can do this or drill and tap it with the motor running just makes sure to wear safety glasses.

I know theres a lot of guys like me too who have done them without grease, magnets or running the motor.

its really up to you. We did out 02 with no special method 5 years ago and it runs fine.

^^^your not the only one back when we did the 02 we snapped the tap too, we somehow fished it out with a magnet. The Simple 10 minute edge installation turned into a 4 hour job. I cringe everytime I am tapping a manifold.

One trick not breaking a tap is- Dont try to do it in one shot, run it in a bit and take out ,clean off, re-lube, run back in. should do it in 3-4 shots with no binding or snapping. use grease or even better "anti" or "never" -sieze (depending where your from).

its never sieze here even though the cans are labeled anti:D

To add to that, if you here kind of a snapping/binding sound, stop and back the tap back out as long as its not too late.

If it gets tough to turn stop and back it out, clean the thread, add some thread cutting oil and go back at it, a little tap like that should not take much force and if it does its gonna break.

Remember to leave enough room so you can thread the fitting in. I almost drilled it too close to the manifold stud in my truck!!

Took about 10 minutes to do mine and a friends dodge. Back out 3 to 4 times and you won't break the tap. The manifold is cast iron so its soft. Leave the motor running to help push the metal flakes out and grease the bit to catch the rest....super easy.
