Hey guys, time for your advice :2cents:regarding exhaust upgrade for low mileage 2004 LLY. I Looked online at AFE, Magnaflow and Banks, sparked an interest in an intake system and possibly another tuner. Currently the truck has the AFE turbo inlet tube and the Flashpaq tuner. Used as a daily driver and weekend towing duty. Reliability, economy and then performance are the list of priorities. Runs and tows fine as it is, just looking for improvements as I seem to not leave well enough alone. I looked at a couple of dual systems though I’m aware it is only cosmetic.
Thanks in advance,
Mark

They are all going to do the job just fine, I'd focus on if what metal type you want, 4 vs 5 inch, etc.. as far as tuning EFI Live is the way to go. I have a Banks intake, but most say stock is good until 500hp or so

Just a suggestion, use never-seize on all the slip joint fittings and clamps, it'll make it sooo much easier to adjust after you have the whole system in place. As far as a 4"-5" even a slightly modified Duramax engine does not even come close to the maximum flow rate a 4" pipe is capable of flowing.

The biggest restriction on the stock 3-1/2" system is the stock muffler, some say the catalytic converter but after a few conversations with Magnaflow the OEM catalytic converter flows quite well...

The next best thing for a stock engine IMHO is a set of ProFab uppipes.

Definitely want to do stainless if you areally anywhere north that sees salt as aluminized steel will rot away in a short time.
AS far as 4"-5" it's all personal preference... tone is a bit deeper with 5"
I have a 5 and if I were to do it over I would just do a 4

Most any of the exhausts out there will work. No need for 5" unless you want it as 4 will move plenty. For an LLY, the best upgrades I found is mouth piece, intake, egr blocker plate, exhaust, and a conservative tune. The 06+ intake is an excellent upgrade as they flow plenty of air to support up to 500hp without issue, filters last a long time, and they outfilter most any aftermarket filter out there. The lb7/lly airbox is not that great, and if you put the gasser filter in it, it's a serious choke point. Not to mention they are not sealed well to the fender, the fender opening isn't large enough, and they suck in alot of hot underhood air which has been proven as being one of the major causes of over heating with them. I would stay conservative with tuni,g if you tow as the LLY's in stock form were already pushing the 5 speed pretty close to it's limitations. It doesn't take much of a tune in one to limp a stock 5 speed with a trailer on the back.

After doing your exhaust I really recommend installing a lift pump with better filtration. Can be an air dog, fass or even build your own set up, that's what I do. It makes life much easier on the ole CP3.

Updates & Upgrades

Updates… First off I would like to thank everyone for the replies and recommendations, they are Greatly appreciated. I installed a Banks 4” Cat-back a couple weekends back. I wanted the quietest system that flows well, I immediately noticed an improvement in off idle throttle response and less hesitation (turbo lag), followed by the head pipe a week later. This weekend installed the S & B Air box system. By recommendation from many I liked the filter capacity and the price was very competitive. I also changed the fuel filter since I was right there. Next is the EGR blocker plate. Economy is still in question since I’m having too much fun so far. I have noticed that there is no more black smoke as before with a hard acceleration. I’m sure it is the additional air allowed through the system.
Thanks Guys!!!
