engine stand thoughts

Take the head apart and sand the paint off where the two pipes slide together.

Installing a couple of Zirk fittings works even better :thumb: (along with sanding off the excess paint)

I put one on the top side toward the back and bottom side toward the front where most of the friction is.

we used the one from harbor freight on my motor, and we hung both turbos and downpipe and all on it for mock up purposes. we had to set some weights on the left back to counter the heavy turbo hanging off the right front.:rofl:

Since I figured this whole iPhone thing out here is our jerry rigged stand. I know it's got a 6.7 cummins on it but whatever.

The stand I posted held up my fully dressed out engine (minus a turbo) without problem, but I put a jack stand under it when I left it sitting not being worked on. I didn't want to come in and find an engine scattered across the shop floor.

i know my old stand wont hold up a dmax...it had issues with an olds 455 longblock...so what do you all recommend?

I found this on harbor freights website: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?itemnumber=67015 but i honestly dont think it'll hold and may just fold in half.

i have that engine stand Tom, and its been holding my spare lb7 for a year. The buddy i bought the engine from, also had it sitting on that same stand for a long time too, so i wouldnt worry about it.

Tom we have one at our shop(plumbing shop) and I've had 2 7.3l complete long blocks on it and it never seemed to bother it. Disassembled and reassembled them on it.

More like forced off the edge....the rods are a bit shorter. Not gonna be racing if I dont rebuild. Sucks, but it is what it is.

If that stand can hold up a fully-dressed 7.3, then a Dmax should be childsplay for it. I never would'a guessed that.

I showed Roni the HF site, told her the stand is what I wanted for Xmas, and she just laughed.

I have a few of the older Harbor Freight (non folding) 2000 lb stands and they work great, no worries with a full long block, turbo and all sitting on them. Make sure you grease it so it is easy to turn over - I've tried to turn over a small block Chrysler on one that wasn't greased and don't want to imagine how hard it would be with a Duramax.

Harbor Freight didnt have any of the 2000lbs stands available, so the wife bought me this one:

Just have to go to Home Depot and buy that huge washer overflow tray I saw....it will fit between that stands rails and make a nice drop pan.

I thought the same thing, UNTIL I unpacked it today. Oh man, what a piece of crap. The pivot pipe holding the backing plate was made of...maybe...1/16" metal! Good God, Ive seen swingsets made of the same stuff. My el-cheapo 750lb stand has a 1/4" thick wall pipe for the pivot. The legs are made of...maybe...1/8"thick square tube. No way in hell would this "1250lbs" stand hold up a Dmax.

Needless to say, I have an email into Sears to see if I can return it, and am back on the hunt for a REAL engine stand.

Yeah, he did. They are heavily built, but Id rather have my own stand.

understandable.... he has a business and I'm sure he'd sell ya one. Prolly very expensive though given teh nature of their robustness and being custom. He might cut a friend, such as yourself, a break though?
