I know I'm not the new oil just doesn't seem as thick as the old cj-4 did kinda feels like water or compairble to the feel of gas engine oil when you get it on your fingers

It essentially is gas engine oil with soot suspending additives. Many of the ck-4 oils also meet the sn spec I believe it is which is the latest spark ignition oil rating.

Actually, the CK4 oils can never meet the SN spec. SN spec has zinc & phos at <800ppm and CK4 allows <1000ppm so they will never have a dual rated (CK4 & SN) bottle.

Based off the info you gave, if the oil has less than 800 ppm it will meet zinc and phos requirements for both SN and CK4 so yes a dual rated oil is possible, Barring any other differences in the specs that would make them mutually exclusive.

But SN's HTHS of 2.5 MAX is out of spec for CK4's HTHS minimum of 3.5... :thumb:

Here's some info from Shell...

"Previously, heavy duty engine oil marketers could claim an API gasoline performance standard on their products if they met CJ-4 and the required performance tests for gasoline standards. The recommended viscosity grades for modern gasoline engines are XW-20s and XW-30s. As such, this waiver process is being phased out. Heavy duty engine oils which are XW-30s (and which claim API CK-4 approval) cannot also claim API gasoline standards, unless they meet the current phosphorous requirements/limits. With that said, The new fully synthetic Shell ROTELLA® T6 Multi-Vehicle 5W-30 is one such product that meets the performance requirements of API CK-4 as well as API SN and is formulated with 800 parts per million of phosphorous, which meets the API SN requirements.

While the industry waiver is still currently in existence for heavy duty engine oils that are XW-40’s, this remains in discussion to be addressed by the API in the near future.

However, as a leader in the transport industry, the Shell ROTELLA® brand has made the decision to remove API SN claims, regardless of viscosity, from our other products which do not meet the preferred low-phosphorous chemistry for gasoline engines. It’s also important to note that there is no change in formulation associated with this change. It simply means that Shell ROTELLA® products will no longer claim formal API SN approval for products other than our fully synthetic Shell ROTELLA® T6 Multi-Vehicle 5W-30 on labels, technical data sheets, rotella.com and marketing materials moving forward."

In addition to the Shell Rotella T6 that meets both CK-4 and SN, I saw this at the store the other day:

It claims to meet CK-4, CJ-4, and SN specs.

I am going to see if I can grab a couple drums of the old-school Delo 400 that was just CJ-4. Might be paranoia, but my built motor needs all the help it can get lol

DAVe3283, if you had read the post right above yours you would have seen where Shell will not "dual rate" Rotella except for one 5w30 with sulfur & phos <800 ppm.

Boise rob there is a thread on BITOG about Rotella T6 5w40 being dual rated, there is a lot of confusion but apparently shell has stated that Rotella T6 5w40 will be dual rated. I have some in the barn, I'll have to see what it says on the bottle tomorrow.

Anything ck-4 rated is automatically cj-4 rated I believe due to the reverse compatibly standards from api. I hate saying it, but the motorcraft 15w40 is still just cj-4 and the old formula for now.

I wasn't saying CK-4 isn't backwards compatible, I was merely showing an example of an oil that meets (or claims to meet) both the diesel CK-4 and the gasoline SN standard, which was postulated as impossible earlier.

I did read it, you literally quoted Shell saying it is both CK-4 and SN rated, but they will stop printing SN on it soon.

Ahh, gotcha. Thought you were refferring to the cj-4 rati,g on it. I was ignoring the part about SN since he had already proven himself false on it.
