Good morning all, Hey I've got a question about egt's how to you guy's run cool? or do you? As most of you know, I got my gauges installed finally and I checked the max egt's( without towing ) with my tuner on stage 2 , the pyro only went to 1100 and since 1,2, and 4 are my favorite tunes( for some reason stage 3 runs like crap ) I went straight to 4 and holy sh*t it shoots to 1300 in like 3 to 4 seconds maybe quicker. This blows that means i've had her pretty warm before because there have been times when I've ran wide open until I got scared and let off( upwards of 120mph ).What can I do to buy some more time in the throttle? or is it ok to stay there for a few seconds? I'm working nights until tuesday so I'll see what I can do but I'm definately not going to run as fast as I used to.

1300 you can hold for quite a while. I dont mean 5 minutes but the short amount of time it takes to get to 120mph wont destroy it.

Its not about the peak temp its about the duration. A lot of pullers run 1800-2,000* and sometimes more. I used to with my stock turbo too. But its only for a few second,.

To lower them you just have to get more air in there or some water. so basically just dont worry about it

i felt the same way when i got my gauges. i had the quadzilla and would hold in it al long time. it scared me when i got the gauges. cheapest way to reduce egts is water meth. i ran a 50/50 mix and saw a significant decrease. use a windshield washer fluid(30/70) mix and it will lower them even more. ran really well with it also.

A bone stock truck will normally hit past 1300 when climbing grades towing in the summer. There was a Garrett doc that said 1350 sustained max.

Blue has buried the 1600 deg pyro hundreds if not thousands of times with no ill effects so far. You just can't sustain them for long.

The bigger question is what do EGT's tell you. Do they tell you piston temps? Nope. We started to melt pistons with only 1450 deg for a few seconds, yet no damage was done when taken past 1832 F.

I'm of the belief that the best indicator would be oil temp and pressure instead. Oil is sprayed directly on the piston. Your oil pressure gauge is a "poor man's pyro", and will show high piston temps even if EGT's are low.

I'm installing a water/meth kit right now for this reason!! I plan to run only 10% meth though. I'm more concerned about egt's and I don't plan to put a bigger turbo on until I build the engine due to the cost so it is definetly cheaper.

I'll have a definate answer in 7000-8000 more miles ( a month or 2:eek:)

But I would not recommend running WWS.

I've got a couple oil analysis threads going over at the place in water/meth area.

how many jets are you using? i had the two biggest ones in mine. if you plan on running mostly just water you need to back off the jet sizes or it will slow you down.

I pull a 20ft dump trailer full of dirt over some high elevation hills and been trying to figure out how to lower my egts.Pat are you saying the oil pressure drops or raises,If that is a one of the indications I will be bying a better gauge to monter it better.
If you increase the timing it just makes the engine run hotter.
Thanks Darryl

TX of course
I don't know how much I would trust our oil pressure gauge. Its controlled by the ECM IIRC its accuracy gets a little fuzzy.

IMO the oil pressure gauge is actually quite accurate. Ive always found that it reads almost exactly what the "actual" reading is off the data bus.
