just had my truck tuned by reese (righteeyeblind) and had my tranny limp twice. first time was a trans protection, second time was the code P1720. whats the code mean? my obd2 reader didnt know the code. i am running the stock tranny, which is more then likely the problem.

no complaints about the tune, he did a great job and was a great guy to deal with. wouldnt hesitate to go back to him.

easy (equals cheap) fix... is a smaller tune. That is the main reason I have not gone bigger on my 04'... I have an extremely worn out stock trans.

After I had Mike build the trans in my 03' I got the HOT tune installed...

Cliff notes:
transmission = build cost and down time
smaller tune = less trans limp, less cost, more time to save up for trans upgrades

There really no easy fix. Least that I know of. Smaller tune will help but once u have limped it, it will happen easier and easier now. Better start saving for it imo.

I'm Pertty sure the Alison would be easy to build. I don't have much expireance, hoever I have built a 4L80E a few times! Some major problems I had was not having the right tools! Some of the bearings require a press and it is strongly recomended that you replace a seals and bearings! Call up Hughes Trannsmissions! They are real knowlegable and if you want to do the build your self and it fails they may cover a rebuild at their cost for warrenty on their parts! They would charge for the tranny drop and instal plus labor which is a fare deal!

Also I don't know how well the Transgo is for the Allison, but it worked great for for my 4L80E on my gas! Also they sell books on how to build the trans on Amazon.com! I got one when I first built Aotu Trans!

Some advice:

1) get a book they have info like torq spec and assembly diagrams
2) They make a think gell type lube (get the Blue kind) that converts to trans oil so you don't have to change it, also, it can be used to hold parts in place
3) get a few buckets cause you HAVE TO soak clutch plates and I would recomend soaking all the parts!
4) make sure you have tones of clean space and tools organized (buy a seal pick set it's a life saver)
5) when you take it apart keep it in order from which it came apart!
6) some bearing on the pistons and drums are one way and sould NOT be lubed with the bule lube- they should be soaked in Trans oil
7) look into mods that are better than factory like no slip bearings and kevlar bands and clutch plates red Alto or Blue
8) If you have questions ask professional builders- don't hesitate!
9) Transmissions go together one way so don't force parts seals ext!
10) enjoy it it's not as hard as people make it, just a bit overwhelming for first timers!

I may have left other stuff out! Just remeber if you build it you should just replace everything you can while it's out good or not a transmission is not something to waste money on! All ask for help if you need! :thumb: Good Luck what ever you decide!

LEAVE IT OFF THE HOT TUNES! You wanted 2 different hot tunes and that is what you got. I warned you about your trans and especially in fifth gear. When your texting me saying you beat a LLY with the full Banks kit I knew you had it in the hot tune. The hot tune is only 90hp but that is enough to break a 5 speed with 110K miles on it.
Now that you have limped it twice it will only get easier. Now bring it back to Fairbanks so I can tune it down a bunch on all tunes so you wont have the temptation:thumb:
Call me or Albert if you have any questions cause we can answer this stuff. Stuff like this makes me not want to do any favors by tuning peoples trucks I should just keep it to myself.

reese, im not blaming you at all for any of this. the tunes are great and you did a great job, and i would like to keep em. ive only ran the hot tune 2 times, and i realize that limping it was my fault. im just running it on the small tune for now till i can have u build my trans. if the trans goes out, it goes out. my fault.

It's cool Michael, the title of the thread is just a little misleading is all, no big deal. Welcome to the life of modding the Duramax. It goes something like this, Install mods, find new weak link, install mods, find new weak link, repeat until wallet is broke:D

i think the hardest thing id pulling the trans out... however they have alot of little parts... but if you can rebuild a motor.. you could build an ally... just gotta take your time... buy some books to look at... atsg.. i believe suncost sells one as well... and get some number to some GOOD people that will help you if you run in to problems.... have a clean work area... and keep things together...
