I don't know if it is the same guy but there used to be a guy in my area that was really talented with high performance engines. He might have moved up a bit. He custom built me a cam for my 383 stroker at a great price. He used to have a barn that he had thousands of dollars worth of equipement in. Amazing inside and from the outside it could have had cattle in it. Made his money of volume and skill very little overhead kept his prices low.

I have a couple extra Cam's laying around the garage but I'm not willing to go through all the work to change one out if it does not perform as promised, or wrecks sh!t in my engine. Now if a couple braver souls then me wanna a give it a try and post positive results I would be more then happy to send him one;):D

This guy is located up buy me. Sounds like the same guy mudygmc is talking about Small shop low overhead. Last I heard, (years ago) it was a father son operation doing ford engines. Must be moving up in the world.:D I've never had him do anything for me, but I heard they did good work.

Cams

You guys need to understand that just because it's a diesel does not mean it has to cost 4X the money. It seem's most want everyone to believe this, but not so. To regrind a cam should not cost more than a couple hundred dollars. To grind a cam is no different no matter what it's out of. Now does he know what to grind it? Not sure but the price is on parr. Just remember that big power has been made with a stock cam. Jeff

Yup. A Dmax cam is nothing special other than being a roller profile, and most late model GM is roller cam now.

Once set up, the cam grinder can spit out a cam fairly quick.

The base circle is reduced on a regrind, and in some cases can cause geometry issues. I doubt they are getting crazy enough to worry about it on a Dmax though. Normal correction is to use a longer pushrod, but check coil bind at the spring when doing that.

Cams are RPM devices. If you are going to run peak HP at under 3500, then I'd be stunned if there were significant gains to be had with a non-stock grind, since the Dmax LLY+ is a 3200rpm engine. But there are probably gains to be had if you want peak to be past 4000, and especially if you want 5000+ peaks.

we pull around the 4000rpm mark. . . and all i want is a stock lift cam and more duration. and a little more over lap,to maybe use the boost to help clean out the cylenders a little better. so i guess were going to be the pig and give it a try. im going to spec out a stock cam this weekend, make my changes, and go from there. :thumb:

I just found my old receipt from him. It is the same guy I was thinking. I don't think you will have any issues with his parts or service. He is very smart and does great work. I wish I would have know about him last year when I did my build. It would have saved me a couple hundred.
