I have a friend who is a in denial Ford ownwer ( I say in denial because there slow and he does'nt think so ) He say's " well least I dont drive jap crap" ! I say whatever douchebag!! I know the D-max is an Isuzu engine but is it completly Japanese or Asian designed or did some other people have there hand in the cookie jar? Further more What about Cummins and Powerstroke? did hey have any foreign influences or patents go into there design? Just wanting a little diesel history lesson:)

You can always hit him with the fact that GM has always had diesels that were designed as diesels whereas FORD's first 6.9L diesel was a converted gas engine(some IH tractors in 75-78 were offered with it as a gas option). Or how the CUMMINS was built origanally to be a 3rd world workhorse.

The original 5.7 diesel gm used was converted from a gas motor too wasn't it? the one that broke crankshafts all over the place and made absolutely no power....

Who cares if the Japanese had an influence.. unless someone is blind they can't help but notice the Japanese build a lot of quality things. And the motors are assembled in the USA giving Americans jobs... pretty decent combination really.

Uh, Ferm....GM built arguably the WORST diesel engine of all time....the 5.7L that was based on the Olds 350. First 4 years of that motor were hell. By the time they fixed all the issues, the motor's rep was trashed, along with the public's perception of diesel engines in general. 30-some years later, people still bring that engine up when talking about diesel vs gas....thats how bad they were.

As for the Dmax, so what if its a Jap-designed engine? If someone has to fall back on that argument, then they arent worth arguing with in the first place. Bottom line is, the Dmax kicks butt, and the other makes had to adapt to keep up.

i always like now when those guys are like yeah the dmax is still a 6.6 where as strokers and cummins are both 6.7's. i told them after laughin, yup still the same basic 6.6 design, and still more hp and tq, b/c every one says the dmax is gonna have to get a bigger displacement to keep up with the new stroker, they say the stroker isnt at its full potential but the duramax is, i told them yeah wait till we have twin turbos stock, ha, those strokers dont stand a chance. haha gm needs to come w/ an EFI option from the factory haha. that would really piss ppl off

I don't believe any of the Big 3 can say that their motor vehicles are 100% American manufactured ,the components (parts) are built and designed here in the United States of America.

In my opinion that fact is sadder than the whole idea of arguing about the topic. Blame greed or blame NAFTA ,pick your poison............. :(

The Duramax is built and designed by Dmax LTD in Ohio and is something like 80% GM owned. No jap crap here and even if it was, Isuzu is one of the largest and most respected diesel engine mfgs in the world. No a bad thing I don't think.

I know the 5.7L was a converted gas engine, but that was mainly used in cars. When they put diesels in trucks they went to DETROIT DIESEL and had them build a diesel from the ground up, except for the fact it used the same 90 degree bellhousing bolt pattern and the same motor mount pads as the gas engine. FORD fan's get pissed when you point out that there first diesel truck engine was a converted gas engine. And of course the 5.9L tractor engine. A friend of mine had his sisters car towed over to my house with his dad's truck, and I could have swore it was a damn tractor outside when he pulled up.

the 5.7 was not a converted gas engine...its only real similarity is the displacement.

not sticking up for it though its without a doubt a huge piece of sh*t

They did make a genuine converted gas engine as racers years back were using the diesel heads to up there compression. They were a rare duck though and not many were built as it was a nightmare.

How much do you want to bet on that, Beech? :D The first gens D-blocks literally were. If they didnt break cranks, the block webbing would fracture, or the injection pumps would kill themselves. GM blew it big-time on those motors, and had to re-engineer them, hence the DX block...which had the same dimensions and used the same style parts, but was designed and more heavily built as a diesel engine.

I knew guys who took the DX block (the 2nd gen good one), bored them out, used 403 pistons on the diesel rods, and put gas heads and intakes on them...they ended up with high rpm Olds motors.

Our trucks are a melting pot of countries. The fuel system is German, the motor is Japenese but assembled in Ohio, the trans is made in IN & MD, electronics are probably Korean, The tires they come with are made in China.....

blame greed or blame NAFTA ,pick your poison............. :(

But Al Gore said NAFTA was gonna help us. :broke:
