IMO the filter/water separator is a must-have. If it is not allowed to drain it fills up in no time. Connected to Autometer 60 psi boost gauge and no flutter. Filter, fittings, and tubing from Lowes.

I dont have a gauge but was thinking about one idk if I need to mess with it. So the soot goes into that filter and you just clean it out every so often?

Main thing is to let the water drain. I started out with the spring-loaded drain reversed thinking I would drain it manually when it needed it. It didn’t work out so well because it filled up with water too quickly and got so sooty that it was hard to tell how much water was in there. Now it’s setup to seal under pressure and drain when the truck is off or under vacuum. Note: Without a drain hose on it I could hear the drain opening and closing – it made a clicking noise. I haven’t cleaned/changed the filter yet and it’s been about 15K miles, still works great.
