Drill Bit to Pin Water Pump?

So was all set to pin my water pump and none of my bits will do the trick. What bit is everyone using to get the job done? Any help would be appreciated.

Just have a machine shop do it. They won't charge much. Remember to do both sides. A pin is sturdier but if you weld it completely around you shouldn't have a problem.

The ones that have problems are usually just spot welded. Doesn't hurt to pin and weld haha.

You'll want cobalt bits, oil, and patience.

I wouldn't be as concerned with the drill bit as much as how you are going to drill it. You'll want it as rigid mounted as possible or your going to have a crooked pin or a loose hole (thats what she said) when you are done.

The shaft is to hard, normal drill bit won't even touch it. You'll need a carbide end mill to do it. I ended up just drilling down the side of the shaft (impeller side) about 1/4 inch deep on 2 sides and then filling the holes in with weld, focusing the heat on to the shaft mostly since the impeller is cast iron. The weld keeps the impeller from spinning in any way, shape or form. The gear side can be welded normally since the gear is steel and not cast iron.

Here is how I see it. If you weld the end all the way around and it fails you got bigger issues going on. Just be careful and don't put to much heat and make it brittle. Drilling through the shaft will cause a weak spot that can make it do more damage if it failes. I did a lot of research last month on mine and I just welded mine up.

there are guys who have lost welded impellers due to high RPM and big power. mark and others have posted that before. the only thing that has shown no failures as far as loosing an impeller is a pinned pump.

that said, im running a welded pump without issue so far but that was before Mark had pinned pumps. i would have gone that route if they were available.
