Drag Racing Question

I'm going to take my truck to the track in a few weeks, it's setup to pull. My question is the front diff is welded and I have a spool. Is drag racing with a welded front diff a bad idea? I have 4.56s so just gonna keep the 315s on it, always curious what it would run.

The general consensus is you can't steer with everything locked up like that. I would go try it out on an empty Street somewhere first

Most definitely do some test hits on a deserted road first. Learn how the truck may react. Good luck.

Might just swap an open carrier so I don't have to worry, was just curious. Just want to make an 11 second pass and I'll be happy! Any of you guys in the Topeka, KS area June 18 there will be a heads up diesel class at streetcar takeover!

Just wanted to update this for you guys. Went to the track Saturday and had a blast, welded front end and all. I was super happy with the truck, had a hard time holding the brakes at the line so my 60' was awful. Best pass was 13.3 @ 117 with 4.56 gears and 35s. The welded front is a little hard to turn but it is smooth and straight down track

Spools/lockers in the front axle are generally fine as long as nothing breaks. However, if you break a front axle, they will make a hard turn toward whatever side breaks. Congrats on the very strong trap speed. That shows you're capable of mid 11s if you can get the rest of the run dialed in.

Thanks for the advice John!

Thank you guys, I still enjoy pulling so I didn't want to change my setup. Might try a second gear or third gear start in the fall! Definitely had a lot of fun, different then pulling for sure. When the light turns green you must go lol, you can't take as long as you need like hooded to the sled!

only if your racing the guy next to you or are actually in a sanctioned body race. your time wont actually start till you move from start so you can take your time once you light both bulbs. might piss off the guy running the tree if you take too long though :D.

Did you have the truck setup to start in 2nd gear? I would assume 4.56s would basically render 1st gear useless at the drag strip even with a taller tire.

yeh my first pass was a practice run, second pass was against my buddy Mike who has drag raced for years and drilled me on the tree in the first round. I had fun though

no I didn't, next time I go I will be more prepared, just for fun. I was shocked it went 117, 60' was 3 seconds lol

Is it better to start out in 2nd gear? I'm guess with my setup and higher stall like 2800 rpm 2nd gear would be better. first gear would be too low.
