Ive Got My Attitude Monitor Telling Me On Locked Downshifts That Mt Tranny Is Slipping Up To 44%!!!!!!! On Upshifts Just Cruising And When Im Down On It It Never Has Said More Than 2% Slip. Is This Just Another Shitty Thing About The Edge Or Is My Tranny Taking A Dump?

You can't have a locked downshift. Converter allways releases on kickdown.

I personally wish Eddge would take TC slip off the screen options.. It's to confusing for the average person to understand what's taking place......

I think it's a good thing to have. Main thing is you need only watch it when the converter locks. You are watching the turbine speed sensor.

It Doesnt Do It When Im Cruising And Then Stuff It And It Downshifts. It Does It When Im Going Down Hill And The "tow/haul" Does Its Work And Downshifts. The Edge Shows Me That The Converter Is Locked And Then Downshifts And Stays Locked During The Downshift And When It Reaches The Gear That It Downshifts To, It Shows A Slip Percentage Of Up To 44% That Ive Seen. (sorry For The Babbling).

Over the weekend I made a trip north into Utah to go riding. I decided to set my Edge on 2 (tow mode) and change the default screen to show tranny slippage. Here is where it gets strange. I had two steep grades to make on the first half of the trip (240 miles each way) I was towing a 16' flat bed car trailer (maybe 1500-2000lbs) On the trailer was a Rhino (1000lbs) and 2 small kids quads (500lbs max for both) so I am towing 3500lbs at MAX!
At the first hill I had the cruise set at 75mph and it climbed with ease. Outside temps were roughly low/mid 70's. A few miles later I hit the second hill still cruise on 75mph. I make the hill just fine and now I want to get past a few slower vehicles in the right lane. I used the cruise to bump my speed to 80mph. As I get to the last car I bumped the cruise once more to 82 when the tranny down shifted and limped. I wish I payed attention to the Edge but I didnt :banghead: I looked down at the edge and engine temp was 205 and the stock tranny guage wasnt far off. So I pulled over to restart the truck and take back off. The grades I hit in Utah were at a much higher altitude and even steeper grades. I backed off on the gas and had no more issues the rest of the trip. On the way home I payed very close attention to the tranny slip on the Edge. With the cruise set at 75mph climbing moderate hills I would see slip range from 6% to 14% on average. Now on two very steep grades I noticed slip get up around 25%
Is that common for slippage? (6 to 14%) What is the Edge showing me at slower speeds during take off? The #'s seem to jump around and vary a bunch. I know it should NOT limp towing such a small trailer but that is being taken care of real soon!!

are you sure the converter is locked when its showing these slip readings?

The trans would definetly limp itself if it was slipping "25%" according to the edge.

At what speed does the converter lock? I would assume it would be locked at 75mph? While climbing those hills I was watching the slip % jump all over the place. It would bounce from say 6% and 14% and just before the peak of the hill I watched it jump several times to 20-25%. At that point I was afraid of it limping so I took it out of cruise and backed off the throttle. It never limped but I dont think its acceptable to have to back out of the throttle to make a hill doing 75 pulling such a small trailer.
While taking off from a dead stop the numbers were all over the place. I would like to know what they mean. What is acceptable for slip while cruising unloaded? I am gone this week for work but would like to keep an eye on it when I get back. Hopefully I can schedule an appt with MikeL for next week :) for my SCIII install

i didnt call edge yet but i did take a ride in an '02 with ats full tranny and torque converter. with the co pilot on or off the edge still showed 42% slip on downshift. that right there lets me know that the edge is just showing us another flaw in its design.

It's not a flaw. If at that point it didn't show 42% slip that would mean the TCC did not release and it would set a code because then you really do have a mechanical malfunction.

Without the T/H it will lock around 47 mph (ECT above 135±ºF - T/H will not engage when the ECT is below that temp. range) and with the T/H it should be around 26 - 27 mph
