Dowel pins

So i have r&r'ed many transmissions in my day and im trying to install the dowel pins in the block and they dont really want to go in as smoothly as id like. The cone side facing me, and they are going in real hard. I tried some scotch bright pad and cleaned everything up and still same thing. A little tap with the mallet and i cant really feel them seat or verify they have. And they look a bit cock eyed at times. Am i missing something or over thinking this?

Knock them in square, you will feel a difference in the hammer blow, and the sound will change to a solid hit once they bottom out.

I was using a rubber dead blow hammer, maybe i need something with more umph. Ill try cleaning them up better. Also i put this bell housing on and forgot about the two sealing washers on the bottom two bolts. The ones with the washers are somewhere in there. Are those re-usable or should i just go buy two copper washers from the hardware store and put them in?

ive re used lots of them with luck, put some sealer on the bottom of the washer or silicone!:thumb:
