Ok so I bought this truck about two months ago and it had efi live already on it! I put a suncoast stage 4 kit in it myself along cause trannys happen to be my specialty lol also installed the afe power intake and bigger intake tube for the turbo plus ppe boost valve. and have been driving it about a month! So..... i was at a red light and turned the knob to my smoke lope tune! got on it hard.... it defueled and heard "turbo chatter i take it"?? and then it blew out blue smoke for a few seconds! it pushes 30 pds! It started acting weird like it was bogging down and took it easy til i got home! The turbo whistles really loud now. first thing i checked was air filter to see if it came off for some reasom but it didnt! then i looked for any possible intake leaks....nothing idk if i f'd something up or what! also note that i have noticed a quite annoying ticking noise at about 1200 up rpm range at any temperature! changed the oil friday to see if the noise would go away or any diesel in the oil and nothing. no diesel and still the ticking! any ideas on any of this??

smoke/lope tune?

Just ideas, but you could have blown a boot off one on the intercooler tubes, have a hole in the drivers side intercooler tube (behind the p/s pump area), or had an injector fail.

Have you pulled the intake horn off of the front of the turbo to have a look at the compressor wheel? Does it still build boost like it did before?

I would start with the fuel filter my truck started to get boggy and the turbo felt lazy bad but I also noticed a drop in egts so I changed the fuel filter and it was back to normal.

Know anyone with efi live? Can at least get balance rates checked.

Your EGTs seem lower than what I see. 600-700 cruising on flat ground at 55-70 mph.

Start off by not using so many exclamation !!!! points lol it makes for tough reading when it sounds like your screaming every sentence. So you have DSP 5? Does anything change with the truck when you change tunes? Honestly I would get a stock tune flashed in somewhere, Fleece or where ever and go from there. And also have them check your injector balance rates and stuff.

sorry bout the !!!!!!!!!!!! lol thats the way i text too if im screming its LIKE THIS!!!!!! lol anyway like i said before this is my first common rail and first time using EFI live all i know is you flash the ecm bios when u install your tunes. And DSP? idk what that is all i know is I have a dial that has five settings. stock, smoke/Lope, tow haul, race 4, and race 5. thats what im told. and i can tell the difference in each setting for sure it only boosts to 15 maybe on stock and boosts all the way to 30 on race 5. smoke tune its fuels hard and well...smokes lol but the lope thing is new to me. At a stop it lopes like a cammed gas motor but alot worse. It only lopes in drive and reverse til about 5 mph.

Change your fuel filter, its Duramax 101 Rule #1 with Duramax ownership, whenever the truck lacks power, boost, heat, sluggish, "slipping" trans... Itll typically cures what ailes her.

Question tho, when your incident occured did it pop up a SES light? Any Codes? Do you know if the injectors have been replaced?

Ive been pretty hard on stock IHI turbos, and I know of several other guys that have as well, and Ive only seen one that was dead. Im sure there are pleny out there that have died, but if your only making 30 PSI and no leaks, your not hurting it.

ok well that is what im going to do then i'm going to change the fuel filter and see if that helps any thanks for the info. And no i didn't get any codes or lights thrown when it happened. The carfax report shows that the oil and fuel filter and injectors along with a head gasket a while back! and the guy i bought it off of said he changed everything regularly. oil every 3000 with amsoil and a wix. im not sure when the last time the fuel filter was changed but I will see if i cant get that done today!

I would think the boost should be higher on a stock tune that 15. I hit at least 23-25 stock. Yea like others have said, change the fuel filter and see what happens.

Is it still making the ticking sound and whistling louder? Are you sure you don't have a boost leak? Maybe leaking before turbo? If not, still leaning toward the turbo here. Was there any oil in the ic pipes? I know ihi turbos are tough but I also have one in my shop right now that would scare the sh*t out of you. Keep us posted for sure. Good luck

Well the ticking noise persists and i have came to the conclusion that it has to be the fuel filter! I took all the ic cooler tubing out and there was no oil in it or any leaks! there was no play in the turbo compressor wheel! the egts hit 600 max when u get on it at about 40 mph its sluggish. I have a question though would a bad fuel filter cause any kind of injector knock? and bad fuel milage? im going to replace the filter regardless but i wont be able to buy one for like two weeks just trying to see what everyone else thinks it could be! Thanks
