Oh hey, I didn't realize you had your own shop. Awsome, congrats on the new shop by the way. I think that was you. So not to sound even dumber, but Im looking for a turbo-back exhaust. I'm not really sure the difference between the front pipe, down pipe, up pipe, ect.. When I did the exhaust on my powerstroke it was much simpler. But judging by your prices I will probably order from you. So could you clearify me a little?

No one makes a true turbo-back kit for the Duramax. The LB7 has a 6 bolt flange for the downpipe and a V-band clamp at the bottom. Apparently the exhaust guys decided the down-pipe was part of the turbo and that they would start calling the front pipe the downpipe. Since then a few have corrected their terminology. Anyway, any turbo-back or down-pipe back exhaust you order will only go from the stock down-pipe back - if they list a 4" down-pipe they are actually refering to the front pipe.

So my prices above will get you from the down-pipe back. The factory downpipe has a 3" flange connecting it to the front pipe and a 3" inlet at the turbo, so a 3" down-pipe is the biggest thing that makes sense for a stock turbo. Diamond Eye and MBRP are your 2 choices of down-pipes available right now for the 04.5+ trucks. I prefer the Diamond Eye for the fit, finish, and heat wrapping. It runs $202.34 + shipping.

The front pipe is the front piece of the exhaust sytem under the truck, on LLY and newer trucks it includes the cat.

The up-pipes are what go from your exhaust manifolds up to the back of your turbo. Your Ford had up-pipes too, but a cummins doesn't - the turbo is mounted directly to their exhaust manifold.

The down-pipe is what goes from the outlet of the turbo down to the rest of the exhaust system.

Hope this helps you and anyone else that is confused.

up pipes = Go from the exhaust manifolds to the turbo pedestal

down pipe = gos off the turbo and down to the front pipe

front pipe = gos from the down pipe to the CAT/DOC-back exhaust (it is more of a CAT/DOC delete pipe)

Also just a bit more info from you any member you see that has a nickname in orange is a Vendor. Most have shops or sites or make stuff on the side.

So
Orange = Vendor

I knew I wouldn't need the 5" exhaust but I got it because of the deeper sound.

I think it sounds better than my buddies LBZ with 4"

I read in diesel power mag (take it for what it's worth) something about exhaust size with displacement and rpm. After reading it, I won't get anything but a 5 inch, but I don't think you actually got the advantage until above 3000 rpms or something.:)

For those in "no salt" states, aluminized is fine. Salt will work it's way through aluminum.

I disagree Pat...the aluminized exhausts hold up (surprisingly) excellently in salty/wintry states. The 409ss exhausts are an absolute joke. My mbrp exhaust looked like shit after 1 winter, and two of my buddy's aluminized (and 400 dollar cheaper) mbrp exhausts still look brand new after 4 winters.

304 is nice, because it will not rust at all, and looks shiny, but its EXPENSIVE.

I cant bring myself to spend that much money on something you barely see, so without a doubt, I would recommend aluminized to ANYONE regardless of where you live, unless you have 1,200 dollars burning a hole in your pocket. :)

I agree. 1 winter and my MBRP was rusted to hell.

But will it get a hole in it faster than aluminum exposed to salt would, I don't know but as far as appearances go, stainless 409 gets a thumbsdown for being of any sort of decorative use.

Completely agree, I've have MBRP Aluminized on both of my duramaxs and had no problems at all

Theres an exhaust cleaner you can get at some truck stops that you spray on, rinse & it will take most of the rust/crud off. I forget what its called. Majority of the crap is from 409 being magnetic.
