Mike,

Is the Dodge tranny an overrun (I think thats the term) type tranny like the ol' TH400's and 4L80E's? Just wondering about the fundamentals of why there is no defuel on them. A buddy of mine has a built one in his Dodge, but he doesn't have the power of EFI Live to help with the tuning, that's why I was wondering about the defueling.

Same number as the 5 speed, 5 clutch packs. ( C1 through C5 )

I don't really recommend this swap for a street truck.

can the same performance benefits be had with a full manual 4l80 as the dodge trans?

I'd imagine so if there are hard parts that can handle the torque of the diesels...

Main reason for the defuel is the Alli uses 2 pressure regulator solenoids; one bringing a clutch on and the other releasing one. Impossible to dial in under big power. There is allways a tie up, meaning the off going clutch is still partialy applied while the on comming clutch has allready locked. Defuel is the only way to help clean this up to minimize damage. The Alli was not meant for racing but we do a pretty good job making it live.

Full manual is not the way to go. we are not quick enough to shift the trans and be consistant. Preset valvebody or computer is much quicker and repeatable.
The 4L80 might be good if we can make the O/D planet live through this tq. So far I don't think so. I built the 4L85E in Diesel 5's GN running the Duramax and it has held up so far but remember his weight is 4500 lb and he spins the tires at will. If you can keep the tires spinning there is less chance of breakage. When the tires hook under huge tq, something usually gives.

I saw somewhere where a Ford AOD could be build just about unbreakable?? Is this true Mike?

sled puller Travis Dykes probably doesn't feel that way. I think he posted somewhere that he went through more than one auto trans. last year amung other things. He was the only Powerstroke Ford to qualify at INDY and Scheid last year so that is a testament to the power he's making. Goes by "moremph" on the boards.

no. 6th gear needs C2 and C4.

4th and 5th gear also need C2. And 2nd gear needs C4.

So yeah, you could I guess, but you'd be left with 1st and third :D

(I might be wrong with that, just going off memory)

ben

Good for pulling only maybe;)??

The AOD was discontinued in '93 and is a PS. Its new model 4R75W can be built pretty strong but not for a diesel. A lot of these gasser transmissions that are infact bullet proof in a gasser would not make a single pass in one of our trucks with any kind of power. Gears and shafts are just too small.
