Fail...

Dirt Kings magazine
Some of you have asked for a comment, so here is our official statement. Feel free to cut & paste onto your favorite web forum:
Dirt Kings magazine is absolute humor, and nothing but.
The cover was pulled straight from a feature within the magazine, depicting a scene where the driver of the truck was beaten up by the girls for his stupidity (running through their picnic). It was a comic book-type of... feature done with a campy ‘80s action movie theme. We’ve included the story here in this post so you can see it, or you can actually open the magazine and read it for yourself.
The fact that some are associating our cover with a tragic accident that happened last year is disheartening to say the least. Do you really think we’d do something like poke fun of a tragedy like that?! Of course not. This in no way had to do with any actual event that has ever happened, nor would we ever make fun of any tragedy.
The entire cover is a joke and very obviously staged, from the cover blurbs to the Photoshopped image (we would never really put models in harm’s way). This magazine is meant to be about having fun, and that’s it. The creative powers behind this magazine have fought for off-road land use rights for years and we will continue to do so.
We’re sorry that some people got the wrong idea about the cover, as this in no way was supposed to glorify any type of actual tragic event. Luckily, the majority of readers will not make that incorrect association (between the cover and the accident last year) that some people have initially made. Had we known that anyone would (have made that association), we would have gone a different route for the cover. We’re not looking to do anything but give you all a good laugh.

You should be smarter then this! with everything that has gone on in the offroad industry in the last year the last thing that is needed is more bad publicity. or bad images. You guys deliver both in one swing. Humor or not its not funny!

Also, the majority of your readers who won't make any assumptions are uninformed and blind. They have NO real offroad ties and are just posers. Your first impression at anything is what matters...hence, FAIL.

I for one, do not see the humor, even in this explanation... in fact all I see is the same asshattery that started this dust-up... I will continue to go to the sponsors of this magazine to ask that they pull thier support. I refuse to support any business that condones this type of behavior...

Umm... I knew it wasnt a real pic of the accident just by looking at it. I think you are blowing it out of proportion! They even explained the cover and you still bash them?

I am ashamed of any mag that puts a pic of Obama (the biggest, most tragic wreck in the history of America) on the cover but I dont go around boycotting the magazine or trying to get all the sponsors to pull out.

I think you have too much free time... You need an LB7 with bad injectors! LMFAO!

Meh. I came up with better excuses for ditching PE in HS. Needs work.

The cover is the "money shot" in the mag industry. Looks like they shot their load before getting their pants down.

That mag ain't going to croak from the cover shot. It's going to croak from a lack of talent. If that's the funniest shot they could muster after several months of trying, comedy isn't their forte.

Think about it, a truck running though someone's camp? That's it? Geez, a truck hopelessly high-centered on a berm is more comedy, as are 1000's of other situations.

Even if you don't associate the shot with the accident last year, a jerk driving through someone's camp is just lame. No funnier than a shot of someone running a red light and barely missing cross-traffic.

If they have been off-roading for years as they claim, they've probably witnessed first-hand someone driving through a camp. Not funny, and often injuries are involved. Usually it's late at night, and the driver is drunk, and injuries happen to those in sleeping bags next to the fire. Some accidents are funny, others are just tragedy.

The magazine issued a formal apology, and the mother corp is going to do some positive articles towards this end.

The mag was a one-off issue.

I'm going to lock the thread.

We'd like to take this opportunity to make an official statement regarding Dirt Kings.

We absolutely did not intend to draw any connection between Dirt Kings and any tragedy. We regret that the cover came across as insensitive and inappropriate. The article that the cover references is a comic-book style/jokey piece, and the cover was meant to convey a campy 80's movie poster.

We have been paying very close attention to the complaints voiced by people on this forum, and we are taking them very seriously. Certainly, in hindsight, the cover was a mistake and we would change it if we could. We are very sorry to those that found the cover to be harmful to the community.

Dirt Kings is a one-off, and the current issue has been the only one planned, despite any rumors to the contrary. The advertisers included in the issue bought the space in good faith, and no finger pointing should be aimed at them.

Our staff has long been supportive of land use rights, having written numerous articles on the subject, organizing fundrasiers, and spending time to help the cause. With that in mind, we have turned to two of the most trusted names in protecting off-roaders' rights and supporting the community: Fast-Aid and Blue Ribbon Coalition.

With the help of both of these organizations, we've come to an agreement that will create an immensely positive program with the aim of something good resulting from this debate.

Fast-Aid and Blue Ribbon Coalition will be penning a series of Public Service Articles educating offroaders in a number of Source Interlink Media print magazines--publications that had no part in Dirt Kings but have agreed to help in order to spur some positive action.

Off-Road Magazine, Diesel Power Magazine, Four Wheeler Magazine, Mud Life Magazine, 8-Lug HD Truck Magazine, Petersen's 4Wheel & Off-Road Magazine, RV Magazine, and Jp Magazine will all participate. Again, these publications were not involved with Dirt Kings but simply would like to help. These pieces will have important and interesting content relating to both land use and general off-roading practices.

Look for the series of full-page spots to start running soon. These will put both organizations in front of a huge audience (these titles sell more than a million copies combined per month) and the effect will be lasting as the issues run throughout the year.

Dirt Kings was only planned for one issue, but the idea that a humor-themed magazine with adult content persists. If any future issues of Dirt Kings were to come about, we'd be in touch with both Fast-Aid and Blue Ribbon Coalition to ensure content would not be harmful to the community.

Very Sincerely,
The Dirt Kings staff
