L5P Dig street Drag Race 2019 versus 2020

This is somewhat of a follow up on this thread I posted https://www.duramaxdiesels.com/forum/showthread.php?t=82888. . So me and my son were getting back home from an out of town trip and we run into this guy with his paper tagged 2020 GMC 2500 HD AT4 crew cab . I got next to him and rolled down the window and told him mine was a 2019 6 SPD 3.73 geared truck and that I had test driven both the 2019 and 2020 before I bought my 2019 , I told him that I bet the 2019 would smoke his 2020 . He asked if my truck was chipped , I told him it was 100% bone stock , he said his was too . I asked if he wanted to do a dig race at the next light , he said let’s do it . We held up traffic a bit to let the light turn red , I told him as soon as the light turns green you call GO . Light turns green and he says go , I ran off and left him right away , no side by side at all , we put probably 6 truck lengths on him before I quit gapping him . He gets along side of us after I let off and he gives us the thumbs up. Long story short my butt dyno was spot on from when I test drove both the 2019 and the 2020 before I purchased my 2019 . I left in 4WD and I’m sure he did too cause there was no tire spin out of either one of our trucks . So is the 2020 all hype then ? The reason I say that is how can it possibly pull more weight if it’s such a dog out of the hole with the new 10 SPD and 3.42 gears just pulling it’s own weight . Common sense leads me to my personal opinion that with the L5P engines being the common denominator in the 2019 and the 2020 , the 2019 6 SPD and 3.73 gears will out pull the 2020 10 SPD with 3.42s in the 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile . Once again this is my personal opinion after this dig race .

Put 12-15k or more behind both trucks and do it again. My money goes to the 2020. The heavier the load, the farther the 2020 will gap your truck

Your aspersions for a vehicle with more gears when unloaded as being faster is flawed. As I had stated in your other thread, each truck makes the same power at the crank yet the 10speed has way more inertia to spin up, more defueled shifts (that’s time hardly any power is being applied to each shift which takes 5-7/10 of a sec each shift), and low gear ratios that just hinder starts because it has way more than it needs for those gears. The 6 speed will win every time on paper and on the track. This is nothing new.

Supposably the 10 speed has skip shift but nothing clarifies id that is active at wot in normal mode and if the dude put his truck in tow/haul where skip shift most likely wouldn’t happen anyhow, it’s only going to confirm more of what I have said above.

Perfect example of all this is when you drop the 6 speed Allison out of your race truck and put a dodge 48re or rh behind it. You just gain much more ET and mph because you lost shifts that took up time, less inertia, etc etc.

So your saying that if both trucks were pulling a trailer with 12-15,000 pounds behind them and ran the same race the 10 SPD would gap the 6 SPD. I could see that possibility if we were talking about 2 different power plants say like a 5.3 versus a 6.0 stick versus stock . The 5.3 would outrun the 6.0 in a drag race but add a 10K loaded trailer behind each and the 6.0 would gap the 5.3 for sure due to the extra torque the 6.0 has. But in this case both has the same power plant difference being the trans and diff gear ratios. I don’t personally know anybody with a 2020 to do the testing as you’ve described. If somebody does I welcome it and am curious to know but my $$ would still be on the 6 SPD with 3.73 gearing . :D:D

LMBO . Now keep in mind we’re talking about from a dig . Straight 100% Stock against 100% Stock . On my other thread I did say that once they’re rolling they’re pretty even .

Without knowing who turned off traction control with or without stabilitrac, and who was or wasn't in 4wd, this is WORTHLESS.

He would have spun his tires if he was not in 4WD . He never spun at all . These trucks spin the rear tires very easily if in 2WD and the go pedal is flat footed . It’s simple though , conduct your own test .

My dads 18 is faster in 2wd with traction control on. In 4wd it has too much torque limiting. Doesn’t work like that at the drag strip because it doesn’t hook as well.

Don't the 20"s take off in second gear?

Hard to know. Jon said he test drove a 20 the other day and couldnt find a way to watch gear indication on his 20 min test drive. just commented about how smooth it was and how hard it was to know what gear it was in.

Mike, I’m not sure to be honest with you if the 20s leave in 2nd or not . When I test drove the 20 before I did not think it left in 2nd gear it did not feel like it did . My 2019 will flat spin the rear tires if I flat foot it from a dig in 2WD .
