The pistons should be fine . Its the rings that will have the problems. At that HP levels you would be ok to use stock cut and coated LB7's.

Most forged ring packages are very thin and offers high strength, but low life.

also ring groves if not properly made can micro weld to the rings and groove up and cause a blowby and ring sealing problem.

that what I was thinking...just had it torn down before I got it and everything was else good or replaced...how long are they good for...I would have done cut/coated pistons but these are already in it...just incase it ends up with a big brother for the single putting down current #'s:D

10-15k they won't last long in a DD application

Seth I would have to agree , if you plan to drive that truck on the street, which I am sure you are since you traded your daily driver for it, you might wanna spend a little money and pull those pistons out

I have seen plenty of posts from a certain somebody stating they have motors with 30 -40 and even 70k on them with Forged pistons... On the other hand that certain someone is a chronic B.S'er so take it for what its worth:D I personally would not pull it apart untill you need to though...:thumb:

I wouldn't either. Look on the bright side though. Rings are gonna be cheaper then a piston failure

Assuming you catch it in time;) I would suggest investing into a harbor freight compression tester and check all 8 now. Keep an eye out for white smoke/haze and oil consumption without leakage. If you see these or other tell tale signs do another compression test and make your decision to pull it from there..JMHO...

Pistons

Look guy's First Wade is as stupid as they come and there isn't going to be any micro welding going on! The rings will wear and it will start to get some blowby but it won't hurt the motor. JMO but I won't do anything like the others have said until you need to. If there Mahle pistons I think the rings will go a little longer than if they are a Arias or Ross. Have fun with it and be glad you don't have to worry about your pistons. Jeff

You will notice blow-by when the rings are on the out.

In my case, when there was ring failure on a forged piston, it allowed blowby which heated the top ring land and burned through. With an iron insert, that probably would not have occurred.

It wasn't really the forged piston issue in my case, but it might demonstrate a possible consequence of running without the top ring support.

Your results might vary, offer void in Hawaii.

DOH!!! I was supposed to do a write up on some new, cheaper alternatives for compression testing Dmaxes.

I found some P/N's that are cheap and high quality, but I need to verify fit.

Pat, I forgot who it was but they had a KM tool P/N that works. Grabbed it off ebay for about 16 I checked and I saw quite a few for sale on ebay. I have a feeling that would be the best option for use LBZ guys. IIRC they fit all cylinders without a 90*, maybe I am wrong on that?

I'll post up what I found tonight. Yes, the Kent Moore tip works. If they are avail cheap, that is the way to go.

I'm sorry but I have problems with posts like this. You are making a generalization that all forged piston will last 10-15k on the street. There hasn't been a ton of DD forged piston trucks to quantify that sort of thing.
