this is my first diesel truck so forgive me if this a dumb question.... the balance rate on cylinder 8 is all over the place. sometimes it is at +.5 and then it will randomly go up to +4.1. If I stop and a red light a check it will be below +1, but then I check at the next light and its up to +4. All the other injectors stay right about the same all the time the worst being -1.1. Is the injector starting to fail?. lately with the windows down I will sometimes get a strong whiff of exhaust. it doesn't smell like raw fuel, but the smell is really strong. no white smoke on startup or acceleration. at night I can sometimes see it hazing if the light is just right. the truck has less than 100k on it

Run sone additive thru the tank for a couple tanks. Prolly just needs a little cleaning. Best way to check rates is not while driving. Sit idle in your driveway with engine at at least 185 degrees. Then check them.

thanks ill run some additive. Any advice on which one? there are so many options. and I have checked them in the driveway as well. same thing, #8 is all over the place. how long should I let the truck idle for to get an accurate reading?

Thanks for the link. I will give it a shot tonight using those instructions and my friends tech 2. I didn't realize that the CTS is not accurate for that test.

No Problem. I didn't either until a couple of years ago I ran a test on a friends truck with my tech 2 and his injectors checked out fine, next day he tested with his CTS and three were bad. (when engine was warm) then asked me to look at it, found that for some reason it doesn't read correctly. Numbers were waay off from the tech 2. The next closet scan tool I test was the snap on right behind the PPE tuner.

That was a fun little experiment. :D
