Not sure if this should be in the transmission section or gasser section but here goes. So I am all for the reliability of a foreign car so 2 yrs ago I picked up loaded 11 nissan murano for the GF. I can change and have changed all the fluids except the cvt transmission fluid. I've done read all I could find on this thing (mostly forums) and basically have come up with very few change the fluid. It's is supposedly a life time fluid and requires no attention...I call BS but I'm no engineer either. So I'm looking at changing the fluids out and found a procedure to do so but my question concerns the fluid. Nissan states to only use the Nissan CVT NS-2 fluid or it will void warranty. Well I don't have one because it was a used car. So I found either the nissan fluid at $25ish a quart, AMSOIL for $14 a quart or Valvoline for $10 a quart.

The AMSOIL says it outperformed the nissan fluid but it says it outperforms every fluid known to man.

The valvoline says it is compatible with NS-2 and NS-3 fluids.

So to any experts of the transmission. Have any of you delt with these CVT? Can I run a non dealer specific fluid? I plan on changing every 20-30k miles.

TX of course
A friend of our has one and they had to take it to the dealer. They went to another shop, but the shop didn't want to mess with it.

I found the FSM write up so I could do it. I just know the savings in fluid would be alot if I can go the valvoline or am soil route vs nissan stuff.

I don't know much about the cvt. I wasn't sure if anyone on here would have experience with them or not. It's like most stuff the dealer will say only us but charge you a small fortune to do it

I have a small one man repair shop not far from me and he works by appointment only, in addition to that he is also an Amsoil Dealer. I bought Amsoil for the wife's 2004 Honda and asked him about the P/S and transmission fluid, nope, I use Honda fluid for the P/S and transmissions not Amsoil. I would say he is a pretty honest guy being an Amsoil Dealer and not using the Amsoil' one size fits all mentality. I would stay with the Nissan fluid in your case for the transmission..

When it comes to CVT only use dealer fluid, I saw some pretty ****ed up stuff when people used other fluids in CVT transmissions when I worked for toyota.
