CV Boots

Anyone know where i can find some new CV boots for the front CV axles?

mine have ripped and started throwing grease and would like to replace the CV axles before i destroy them. i am not really interested in just replacing the whole axle with a NAPA or Autozone cheapies. i've read that they are about 1/2 has durable as the GM (OEM) ones.

i was browsing on line looking for some replacement boots but there seems to be dozens of shapes and sizes that all say are for my vehicle. but the large price range and part numbers makes me cautious.

anyone else know of a good place to get just the boots? P/N?

you can get the boots from gm. they have the best ones ive used

i have NAPA's boots on my outers. the stock GM ones are for sure the toughest, the NAPA ones are not nearly as thick. i replaced mine about 6-7 years ago though and still going strong. i jsut walked in and asked for a replacement boot. they had kits there.

I have a brand new inner boot and grease, still in the box, p/n is like 2009-2010 when I wrecked the LLY, I'll get them.

Got my boots in today and installed. eBay specials for $25

1st one to remove the CV axle, disassemble the joint, regrease, assemble with the new boot took about 2 hours. The 2nd side took only 1 hour to do the same thing. I'm happy. I think it was well worth it. :thumb:

Murphy's law strikes

Making a turn in 4wd (was on pavement, :banghead and heard a pop. Looked under and saw the freshly rebooted cv joint hanging down.

Separated the joint so i can still drive it home with out the tire falling off

Damn, that sucks . I was just telling myself I need to reboot my OEM axle my Napa axle is making some bad noises after only 2k miles...

I would reboot mine again if I was back in the same situation. It was the inner joint that failed and I rebooted the outer joint so i know it wasn't anything related

Luckily i had just been in there so it was fresh in my mind on how to disassemble the joint and had it apart in less than 5 minutes with it still in the truck

I don't plan on using NAPA/aftermarket. I did happen to find someone near that has two GM/OEM for sell cheap so i am going to give that a shot. Plus I will have another as a backup :thumb:

Gas and diesel cv axles for the 2500hd's are the same correct? From 01 to 10 or thereabouts?

I replaced the axle today. all good, up and running

I also took the busted one and cleaned it up to see where it failed. well it looks like it just popped out and tore the boot. that's it. doesn't appear to have anything damaged other than a small ding/mark. probably from hitting something on the way out.

do the joints normally fail like this? looks like i can put a new boot on it, smooth out the ding and have a perfectly good CV axle

So it just popped out when you had it hard over in fourwheel? Is your truck lifted? The only i ask is ive seen the 1/4" spacers between the axles and center. Just sounds kinda weird that it just popped out. When it rains i always drop it into high or it just breaks traction unless you feather the throttle like your leaving the boat ramp.

Yes, it is lifted. Currently i have ot set so the CVs are level (see photo). I have done the same thing in the rain without having any problems. Then this time i felt the strain just before the pop when it came apart

Clean it up and reuse it.

Pull the outer axle nut off while the weight of the truck is on the lca (so your cv is as close to flat as possible). See how far you can move that cv in towards the diff before it bottoms out. You may need thicker spacers. With the cv flat, you should have about 1/2" to an inch before it hits the back. I'll bet it's real close to pulling out as it sits right now

Bump this back up. My driver cv pops. Passenger is a Napa with a torn boot. Seen several good things about Cardone select HD cv’s. Amazon has them for $77 a piece shipped with a lifetime warranty. At that price, and not knowing how long the Napa has been in there and ripped, I should just replace them both shouldn’t I?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Cardone and NAPA are the same thing.

I certainly wouldn't want to have to deal with any warranty problems with the Cardones from Amazon, shipping, etc vs just stopping by your local NAPA
