I have an 02 lb7. Hazing white smoke and using coolant. The repair shop said my balance rates are all 2 or under. Mechanic believes the injectors have been replaced before but that the cups werent replaced. Does this seem logical? Also throwing a low fuel rail pressure code which he says is my cp3. Truck has 157000 miles on. The mileage is his reason for thinking the injectors have been replaced before

Pliable. I tried that before I took it to the shop. Mechanic says the head gasket is fine. He wants to stud it when he does the other job for future security

Before you take it to the shop I'd do a return test on the injectors to see if that is your problem with the low rail pressure. Just because the balance rates look fine doesnt mean the injectors are healthy. Also command max rail pressure at idle and see if the cp3 will make it. You loosing coolant and your hazing problem can be two different things. If you studding it, I wouldn't do the change one bolt at a time trick with 157k on it. I'd pull the heads and replace the gaskets and stud it. While you have it apart replace the cp3, injectors, reseal the cups

Mechanic says the cp3 cannot maintain the rt pressure. He wants to replace the cups, the cp3 and stud it, one at a time, at a cost of 5500. This seems to be a little steep to me but im new to diesels

This brings back terrible memories. When I bought my 02 it was loosing coolant with no visible leaks. I thought headgaskets. Pulled apart all the way only to find out the cups hadn’t been resealed when injectors were done. That was my issue all along. I wound up having a nightmare due to some bad decisions. By the end of it I had a new cp3, injectors, two sets of headgaskets, studs, and water pump. But I still believe my main issue was the cups.

These trucks are NOT cheap to work on. If you’re good with your hands, it’s not a horrible job but it’s time consuming. You also run a huge risk of ruining your injectors as soon as you crack open your lines.

Sometimes the cp3 can't maintain rail pressure because the injectors are returning to much fuel. The hazing leads me to the injectors not the cp3.

we dont have enough info from you or the mechanic to make an accurate diag on this.

But from what i gather from your posts, either the mechanic needs to diag further into the truck or you need to ask more questions.

get every injector balance rate, then get the main injection rate of the truck at idle, in park, no a/c or acc running.

next, the tech should tell you how he diaged its the cups leaking. cooling system pressure test should have been ran and checked for combustion in the system.

3rd, a return rate test should have been ran on the CP3 and injectors to determind if the CP3 is indeed bad or if its just injectors that are returning too much fuel. Just saying its not holding rail could also mean air getting in the fuel system like a bad fuel filter, fuel hose sucking shut, or fuel filter head leaking (extremely common). any of those three can cause this when you have no lift pump.

if the truck is 100% stock, studs are a waste of money. they will not prevent an old prone to leak HG from leaking. If hes is GOING to stud it like you make it out to be done, hes either pulling one bolt at a time and installing a stud without removing the head or hes pulling the heads in which case, they should be sent out to verify they are flat and dont need any more attention. from what i remember, you cant get 1 or two studs in at the back of the heads with the heads on the truck. they have to go in with the head so keep that in mind

if the tech cant get you the correct info or answer you back knowledgably, take the truck elsewhere.

As James mentioned, the left rear outer stud will not go into the head. The stud hits the firewall. You can dent the firewall to get the stud to clear... But I agree with everything James posted.

When I have studded heads in the truck, I used a zip tie to hold the stud Burn in talking about in place while setting the head.

I've never seen cups or head gaskets on a Duramax cause white smoke at idle, but I've seen a bunch of bad injectors cause it and still have good balance rates. I would seek a second opinion.
