Last Saturday when I was leaving work, I cranked my truck like normal, put it in gear and was driving out of the parking lot but before I made it very far the DIC starting dinging and said "low oil pressure" and the truck shut off.
Never had this happen before, so I waited a minute...cranked the truck again and it started but it ran kind of weak for a few seconds so I cleared the codes with my Edge Monitor while I was rolling slowly down the road and the truck started running normal again.
No other problems all week.
Then...Last night the wife and I were leaving home in the truck to go out for dinner...made it about 2 blocks from home and the DIC started dinging again and said "low oil pressure" and the truck shut off and would not restart. Cranks over and over and over but will not start.
I had a buddy come help me pull it back to my house and I did a lot of research on the forums but can not come up with someone having the exact same problem.
I pulled the codes with my Edge monitor and it gave me P0193 , P0642 , P0670
I can clear out the codes and try to start it and it will crank over fine but never start. then gives me the same codes again.
The primer bulb is firm, the filter has less than 2000 miles on it.
Can anyone please help?

went back out this morning.....wiggled the wiring harnesses everywhere I could reach.....still cranks but no start.

went back out an hour later...didnt touch anything just popped the fuse box cover back on...truned the key it cranked and started!!!

Drove it thru the neighborhood, everything seems ok except I keep getting the P0670 glow plug code and now a P0237
I am still uneasy about even leaving my neighborhood in it

Even if the ECM detects low oil pressure, it will NOT shut the engine off.

So the "no start" condition has nothing to do with the low oil pressure indication.

IMO its a loose power/ground connection somewhere, as adeso said.

Problem

I would unhook your bail connectors and keep to see if a pin is pushed back a little. I had a truck come in with a problem like that with a edge box and that was the fix. It's easy to check with some small pliers and could be the problem.

I disconntected them and re-connnected them the other night but I didnt look closely at the pins...I will do that today when I get home..Thanks

I checked the pins in the big connectors and saw nothing wrong

Truck did good for about 2 days.
Then got ready to leave work yesterday...truck cranks...starts... but runs REALLY rough..kinda surging and then dies.
I crank on it again and it finally cranks up..runs a little rough, I clear out the codes and it does great after that. Me and the wofe make a few stops after work and I even move it a couple of times after I get home without any problems.
But....this morning I get in it to come to work...cranks...but no start again...DAMMIT
I am about ready to set it on fire.

Intermittent electrical problems suck. But it's 99% probability that it's wiring issues.

Some LLY's cut their wiring harness on the headgasket. Not sure if that's the case, but look near the front of the engine where the headgasket sticks out.

mantua, oh
Did u check all your grounds. There is two one on either side of the block near the front just above oil pan. There is one on driver side right behind the head that goes to the body. Then there is one on driver side up front on the frame just under core support near the core support mount bolt. Try them. grounds cause a bunch of weird problems.

Thanks I will look there.

I checked the grounds on the driver side, but not the passenger side. I will do that today. Thanks

Truck wouldnt crank last wednesday morning...

Wednesday afternoon I get home from work and start looking...
I have looked all over the whole entire engine harness, grounds, no alt bracket rub, cant find anything wrong.

After touching the ground on the passenger side near the front of the engine block the truck cranks. (I BARELY touched these grounds...just a slight wiggle to make sure they are tight) I really dont think that was it.

Only other thing I found was the air filter was SUPER dirty.

I didnt leave the house in my truck thursday or friday...was in my shop working all day and cranked the truick at least 8-10 times each day...it cranked and started EVERY time..
then Saturday I tried it 5-6 times and went out for dinner in it with the wife and made a few stops...it cranked and started every time.
tried it about 6-8 times yesterday and it cranked and started every time.
One of the times I cranked and started it yesterday I noticed that my radio clock was the wrong time...Hmmmm ( that happened once before the other week when it died while driving)
I get the p0670 and the p0237 code everytime...I clear them out with the Edge monitor and they come back everytime I start it again.
I drove it to work this morning without any problems..other than the codes.

This is a common problem with the LLY---At the side of the alternator, the FICM harness tied down with a Zip tie. Cut the tie and pull the wires from the harness and inspect for cuts and wear. The sharp corner of the FICM bracket where it is tied down to, cuts into the wires. Repair and insulate the harness with a short piece of heater hose.

When the clock resets, that is from low voltage--weak battery is usually the cause, but a loose connection can also cause it. Check the battery cables, the connection at the red jumper box, and the body ground under the truck-- by the trans.

Already checked the FICM bracket...nothing wrong there...even pulled all the loom off and inspected.
already checked the battery cables for corrosion and tightness.....I will check the red box and the ground near the trans. thanks for the ideas...keep them coming.

I found the reason for the p0237 code, my boost control solenoid was unplugged, I saw the open connector the other day and thought it was a left over from when I removed all the EGR stuff a couple of years ago.

Looks like the clip that holds the connector together broke off and it dis-connected itself. (not at the sensor but a few inches away on the harness) I put the connector back together with a small zip tie so that it wouldnt come apart again.

Started the truck and no more p0237 code...imagine that..LOL but no more p0670 glow plug controller code yet either. :woott:

I then started looking around again to see if I could find anything that might have been causing my intermittant "crank - no start" condition that seems to keep coming back.

I was checking the connections on the starter and noticed that the end of the solenoid where the wires connect I could twist it, kind of like it was loose on the end...the main body of the solenoid was tight, but that very end piece seemed to have too much movement. (re-man starter bought at Oreilly Auto back in 7-06-11) as I started to loosen the small wire I then noticed that the solenoid housing was cracked and the smaller wire connection was very loose to the housing.

I got the starter off the truck and took it back and swapped it out for another one at the auto parts store. made it there 15 miuntes before they closed for Christmas Eve..LOL
Got home and installed the starter and then when i was connecting the battery...the starter started spinning on its own....GRRRRRRR
It was late and I was tired from having to work at 4am so I left it and will pull it back off here in a little while and see whats up with it.
I really hope that the starter solenoid is the cause of my intermittant "crank-no start" condition.

Since the store wasn’t open yesterday, I hope to swap that crappy starter out for another one today.

But I have been thinking about it…. the starter that was on my truck had a few problems, but I don’t think that it is the cause of my “crank – no start” condition since the truck would turn over and over cranking…but just wouldn’t start.

But at least I should get a good starter on it hopefully today so I can drive it some more and see what happens.

I have to get this figured out soon….I have to tow my 28’ enclosed trailer with my show car in it in 15 days to a big show that is 2 hour drive from my house. Don’t need my truck doing stupid stuff during that trip up there and back!!!

Swapped the reman junk starter out yesterday after I got off from work, the starter that I got to replace it looked brand new even though I know it is a reman, so I was happy with that.

Tested the starter with jumper cables on the ground before I ever installed it….wasn’t going to have the same thing happen to me again…LOL

Installed the new starter and drove the truck around for about 10-15 minutes. No check engine light and truck ran great.

Also, drove the truck to work this morning without any problems.

I found this info yesterday in a search….. a guy was looking for a cheap and easy way to disable his truck to deter theft.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4681220&postcount=9

After reading this, it made me think about that relay, wondering if it could have been acting up causing the “crank – no start”. I swapped that relay out with the one for the Park Lamps since they are the same. I guess time will tell if any of my “fixes” helped.

Thanks again to everyone that gave advice !!

I will keep updating this thread if anything happens.
