couple of LBZ Turbo questions

Hey guys my brother in-law picked up a clean 1 owner 06 LBZ SCLB drove it home from the ship and that afternoon ~75 miles after leaving dealer engine light popped on with the P2563 Turbo boost control position sensor He drove it a little because the autozones scan tool couldn't clear it from what the employee told him and reset it with my autocal the code hasn't came back on after driving about days worth. my questions are:

1) if the code comes back is he better off replacing the turbo or just the sensor?
2) Is there a way to clean the Turbo and sensor?
3) if he needs to replace the turbo will a LLY turbo work on a LBZ? I know he doesn't have the cash for a new Turbo and well I wouldn't mind throwing a nice new turbo under my hood and he can have my old one:woott:

His truck is all stock and he ordered a EGR delete and PCV reroute IS going to put it on next month when he gets EFI Live. thanks for the help guys

Lly turbo will work. Could just be the vane sensor going bad. I'm pretty sure sticky vanes will throw a different code.

1. It depends on how much he wants to spend. If he wants to upgrade and willing to spend the money there's lots of options. If he doesn't want to spend any money you can remove the turbo, split it and clean the exhaust housing & vanes.
2. Split the cartridge from the exhaust housing, clean the vanes up, clean the unison ring, vane surface on the exhaust housing, make sure the actuator & unison ring rotates freely. Once if you do that and everything looks good you'll be able to put it together and back in the pickup.
3. LLY - LMM will drop right in; only difference is the LLY has a different vane position sensor plug but you'll be able to use your LBZ sensor so you won't have to worry about that.

Once he gets EFI live from a good tuner it will be different animal and more fun to drive!!:woott:

Thanks Russ the code hasn't shown back up yet he is going to do the pcv rerouted today and cap the resignator. I read a thread from DF and guy said he sprayed WD40into the turbo than ran it to help clean and lube you think this is safe Russ?

I've never tried it so I don't know!! haha Thats not saying it isn't, I just can't give you a good answer. Taking the turbo apart and cleaning it is obviously the best thing to do.

I remember seeing a guy on youtube that was spraying BBQ cleaning in his LBZ and moving the vane actuator with a hammer but he ended up braking the turbo!! haha:roflmao: He had to do it often but after he did, it work pretty good.

I'd get a tech 2 or V2 and look at actually vs. desired vane position to see if the vane are sticking, that would be an easy thing to do. If you're seeing difference then I'd personally pull the turbo and clean it. Make sure you mark the comp & turbine wheel so that when you reassemble it your rotating assembly will still be factory balanced.

I'll let him know. He doesn't have any scan tools so I may have him use my CTS if I remember it lists actual vs desired vane position.

Get ahold of a tech 2 or snap on scan tool so you can see desired/actually vane position. You'll also be able to command a different position and see what position it actually does.
