I know you dont want to hear it but I think something is getting ready to let go in the engine...and not necessarily a head gasket.

true i dont want to hear that however i wanna know whats wrong and not just drive around blindly..

if it was a short rod wouldn't it show off balance rates and run funny all the time? not just when hot?

Mine (with the factory original engine) would show weird balance rates sometimes and surge at idle randomly and then clear up for no reason. It started with this odd behavior (that I just thought was finicky injectors) about 2 months before I cracked a couple pistons.

How many miles are on yours?

120k....

perhaps i could check the slugs out with a boroscope?

I would, if you can get access to a borescope or know someone who can lend you one.

Its easy enough to pull the injectors and look down there for any cracks developing.

I dont mean to scare you bud but if you catch a developing crack now before it wipes out a cylinder wall its MUCH easier to deal with in the end. :)

I would put a stock tune in it and drive it easily until you figure out a definitive answer. Let me know if theres anything you need a hand with on it.

appreciate it ben, would it be possible to put the scope through a glow plug hole? that would be easier then pulling injectors as ive yet to embark on that job

Better off going through the Injector hole IMHO.. It's really not bad at all on your LLY, I can pull all of mine in a hr or so.

my 2 cents

First the compresion test is not real conclusive to finding a bad head gasket.

Mine had black soot in the coolant tank and the hose would stay hard overnight.

If you hose stays hard and you have new cap you can pretty much guarantee its headgaskets.

if the balance rates in the two cylinders with lower compression are screwy your rods are probably bent.

I got screwy readings when I did my compression test but it has been 27,000 miles since and it hasn't blown up and runs better than ever and it has been on a 500hp tune since 130,000miles has 191,000 now

well i think i was wrong about the hose bit, yes it will hold pressure overnight sometimes but not very much you can still squeeze it fairly easily by hand

You can have bent rods and it show no real signs other than a compression check. Being bent I'm mean buy out of spec not bent to where they are going to come through the block. May have decompressed those cylinders to where they wont bend any further until you add more power.
