Not sure if this is the right area or not. I was in an unfamiliar area yesterday, got some directions from a friend using NSEW, got as far as i knew to go and tried to start following the directions using the compass in my mirror. I headed down one road that was supposed to be east to west and the compass said i was going south. I called my friend and he told me I was going the wrong way, so i turned around and the compass still said i was going south. Anyone ever had this happen and know how to fix it?? FYI I was not on the north pole.

Try to Recalibrate it, found this online.

Compass Calibration and Magnetic Variance
Compass Calibration

Before calibrating the compass, drive the vehicle to a area that is magnetically clean (free of large metallic objects). Also make sure there is no magnetic objects on the inside or outside of the vehicle close to the mirror.
Start the engine.
Press and hold the COMP switch (on/off switch if equipped with OnStar® controls) until the letter "C" or "Cal" is displayed.
Drive the vehicle in circles at a speed of less than 8 km/h (5 mph) until the letter "C" or "Cal" is replaced by a proper vehicle heading. The calibration procedure is now complete.

Mine is off also. It's calibrated to the west coast and I'm is on the east. So the declension is off. But I never use it so I just leave it alone :) let's my weary passengers wonder about their location.
