coloant temp fluctuation (cold weather)

Just wondering if you guys have any coolant temp fluctuation in the cold weather. I havnt noticed and im usually pretty anal, but my truck is studded and deleted. Last night i was on the way home and I had worked on a cummins and pulled the radiator out. But, i happened to look at my coolant temp in the cluster and noticed it was coming down. Found it weird as I hadnt noticed it do that before. I drove a little further and logged temp on my v2. It was set up for celcius but regardless, 82* cruising (179*f) and when I use the peddle to pull into traffic or run it hard, it goes up to 85-86*C (185-187*) THen comes back down to 82*. Its about 12*F outside and I dont get any hotter than I mentioned. Truck is studded, and has zero pressure in the tank. Tank was full and great heat. Swapped the thermostats out today and didnt change anything. Water pump is about 6mo old and its not welded). Do your guys trucks have this fluctuation in the cold temps? I think im just more alarmed because the difference in the needle movement goes from the 1/4 mark to 1 tick under 210. Just seeing what its like for you other cold temped guys. Probably just me being a weirdo lol.

My LLY did that all the time. Had blown head gaskets, but still did it after new gaskets and studs.

Btw mine did here in South Bama, where it stays 90+ most of the time.

Mine does it to. Both of them. Obviously the needle isn't that accurate considering your log only shows an 8 degree temp change. That isn't bad at all

Looks normal compared to mine temp wise.. Mine will swing from 80-92°C pending inclines or declines on the road..hangs out around 83-84°c on flat ground

I wonder if the LLY temp guage was a little more sensitive to coolant temp changes than the LMM and later. My lilly did the exact same thing as the OP. My LMM doesn't. And hell my LB7 is such a cold hearted bitch she never gets above 160. (On the cluster)

All three of mine have had fluctuations when temp is really low. Last winter I got stuck in a really big traffic jam after a tanker flipped at an intersection and it was -20 and the temp would drop so low the high idle would kick back on. I forget what temp that is but in my experience dmaxs are fairly cold blooded.

This is reassuring. Gonna stop worrying. Lol. I think because it's cold and we just had a big snow storm everything is iced up. And I'm caught between the thermostat temps. Thanks guy.

I do know the Lmm trucks will warm up and stay very consistent. But the coolant flow is a little different with he hose behind the turbo also, as with the LML trucks going down behind the engine.

Interesting. Mine move alot between those Temps.

Speaking for my truck only. I have found several things that aren't "right". V2 says 64°C or 147°F dash says....

update, i looked under truck before I left work, and I see where a little coolant has seeped down the top of the lower rad hose @ the water pump. The water pump is about 5mo old. I really dont think that me taking off from a light and it shifting at 2000rpms should make the temp change all that much. I can get a 10*F difference in change on a WOT run. I am gonna pull my water pump back out and inspect it and probably have a pinned one here just for reassurance. If it still does it after that, then so be it.

Make sure it's not the lower radiator hose leaking at the Tee. I had mine leak which I originally thought it was a water pump but turned out to be the lower radiator hose shrinking when it was cold and expand back to normal and seal when it gets warm.

Quick update.

Threw a new water pump on tonight. I tigged it before I put it on. I know i know, shoulda got a pinned one but I don't make nearly enough HP to need that i think. Seemed to be much more under control and not fluctuating as much....but its hard to tell on a ten minute drive home. I will do some more driving tomorrow. I still think I'm fighting 2 other things. I think possibly my cluster is either reacting differently than it used to like the scaling is weird. Or, because the temp is up and down outside (literally had 9" snow last thursday, today was 60*) that my thermostats are fighting each other. We will see. I contemplated selling it and going back to an lb7 as I have some parts off my old truck laying around and have a pretty stout running machine. But i decided against it. I will hold off for now and see what happens next.
