the mahle forged are made of a different grade aluminum then the arias and ross. they dont expand as much after warmup so they do not require as tight of a piston/wall cleareance. its the cold starts before the pistons are expanded that really puts the abuse on them. a street driven truck may see 3-5 cold starts a day where a competition motor might only be once or twice a week thats why they dont last as long in street trucks. Guy has almost 80k miles on mahle forged, he told me that he has seen some street motors barely get 12k before they had excessive blow by with other pistons.

I agree, from what I've heard and you can take it with a grain of salt the Mahle forged pistons seem to last pretty long in street trucks.

a good friend of mine has ross forged pistons and has over 30k miles on them dd sled puller runs the hell out of it around 575hp tho, gonna pull the motor this winter to check things out does use a lil oil tho my vote is forged why spend all that money to still have to worry about pistons, it doesnt cost that much to change rings every couple years compared to cracking pistons in the first year

See, i got no problems tearing into a block every 80k -100+ thats fine, almost wanted for the mileage in a high horsepower engine that gets abused. But the stories of 12k to 20k and rebuilding or re ring is not cool, i can put 20k on in a year very easily, but i wouldn't mind diggin into it every three to five years to run forged aluminum pistons.

Have you looked into monotherm's? Federal mogul was supposed to have a set available i think?

Forged steel would be the ultimate option, but I think they only made like 10-15 sets (they were still in development last I read). And Im sure they were used up. Best option would be to ask Guy @ Socal, he was one of the guys pushing them to be made IIRC.

Motors

If anyone here thinks your going to get 80 to 100 out of a 1200 hp motor are living in fantasy land. There is a whole lot of I was told by a buddy. Ask how many Mahle and how many Arias pistons have been broken. I have PERSONALLY SEEN Mahle's hurt (many race motors) but I have never seen a Arias hurt. With that said anything can and will be hurt if pushed beyond it's desigh intent. Look up what a 4032 piston and a 2618 piston is best used for. Anyone that thinks it's the piston to wall clearance that makes the rings not last should probably do a little reading. Everything has a purpose/use and some are better than others for certain reasons.

Thanks john and jeff I'm going to go with the arias now I need.to figure out what to do about the compression ratio .I know 1200 HP isn't going to last.forever and will need to be tore down and gone through

Shameless plug for my pistons. They are performing well for all in the cast version and have even higher potential in the forged. They should not be dismissed as a viable option for those making power.

Sorry for OT
Does your oval design not hurt the way injectors spray pattern enter the bowl? Seems like the sides would be easier to miss the bowl.

Can't wait til you motor is built funk. Gonna be fun to watch.
