I am selling my wife's 2005 Touareg to my In-Laws in August. i plan on towing it out behind my truck, from san antonio to southern california, but i cant seem to find a place to rent a car hauler that will "safely" carry the car. Uhaul, penske, ryder, and so on. So i was thinking about buying one from craigslist for sorta cheap, use to take the car out and then sell it hopefully not have too much out of pocket cost for the transport. Anyways, i got to think about renting one from craiglist, so far no luck on that either. So I ask if anyone one else has any ideas besides paying the $700 plus to have it shipped out there if anyone has a bumper pull trailer that is semi local that i can borrow for a few weeks, for some money of course. ill be out in cali for about 10 days. August 17th to the 26th.

i looked inside the door label and it doesnt have the curb weight. i found the same that it weighs about 5300lbs. i called uhual and they said it is too much so i am not sure what they have as the weight. even still, they want to rent it for $535 for a week.

really? most of the time you can one way those things for 120ish and 3 days. It says on their website that it can haul 5290 or something like that. I would tell them you are moving something smaller and just make sure the car is empty. I have had issues with them in the past on what their computer says. Like a 2500HD truck isn't rated to tow a single axle trailer...

you can't tell them you will take the spare out, they don't care you have to tell them a car that is smaller. One way 2 or 3 day has been around $110 the last few times I did that

A little off topic but still a good story.
When our Impala got totaled I rented a dual axle U-haul trailer from North Battleford SK to Fargo ND for $100, about 770 miles.
I had planned on my wife driving the van back up here while I drove the pickup but she didn't want to drive separate vehicles so I called U-haul again to see what it would cost to rent one back up here; they wanted $1100 :spit::spit:
I asked why it was only $100 to bring it down to ND and so much to go back, they didn't have a good answer and asked if I would like to take it.

Needless to say we didn't go that route, I used my 16ft car trailer that was at my dads place then sold it when we got back up here being it wasn't getting used at all, someone else can get some good use out of it.

I'd personally start looking on craigslist and call another U-haul asking a price for a dual axle trailer to go one way to CA, just tell them it's a different vehicle being there stupid when I comes to weights.
Also, make sure the U-haul tires are good and aired up b/c they're bias tires, not radials.

Good luck,
Yellowchevy

I've got one you could use but it needs new tires. It's a big tex 18ft bumper pull. If you want to find some good Used tires an put them on you can use it for free. Pm me if you want to talk about it

I was told by U-haul one time that destination controls price. If its a high demand area at the destination, then the price is cheaper. Otherwise, they have to ship it back to a destination that can move it. Makes sense. If they have 3 trailers sitting somewhere that have not been rented for 6 months and a 4th is on its way, something needs to move to where they will be rented.
