I just found out I drew 2b tonight, unfortunately not the late season unit, but I drew the early season archery hunt, I'm still just as excited though, anyone here hunt the area? Friends, family hunt the area before? I've got some leads to follow, but anymore sure would be helpful.

Ya I work out in that area every day. My hunts still show pending:confused:

From what I gather if you got an e-mail last nite, you got a tag, if not its up to over the counter tags.

Never hunted in New Mexico but from what I understand Coues Deer are great trophy deer and tough to harvest.

Goal is to get the North American deer grand slam, down before I'm 30, you can hunt Coues deer in Az, with an over the counter archery tag, if I'm succesful this year for mulies in either Wyoming or New Mexico, I'm going to put together a Coues hunt for next year. There little elusive deer, Im hoping when I go it'll be a dry year, so I can hunt water holes.

Thanks, that actually was a lead, I was going to look into glad I can verify it, I was told though that the oil field roads were closed off, and only foot access was allowed. Ideally thats what Im hoping to find is a good area with no traffic, this is a DIY bowhunt, so hopefully the further away I can get from the hunting pressure, the better the hunting. Good to hear you seen some nice ones as well, I'm a little unsure as to what to expect for animals or quality, since I didnt get the late season migration hunt.

Whitetails only so far, I live in the heart of whitetail country so I try everyyear to top the earlier years, need to get my Coues, Coulumbian blacktail, mulie, and Sitka blacktail yet, I'll save the trip to Kodiak island for last, lol, I'd like to bag everything else before I get tossed around by brown bears.

good luck getting away from people there is a TON of oilfield equipment that drive all over that place. and yes i think the first hunt the gates are not locked but after that you have to hike. but i have an extra key to get through those gates if u want to try

I been doing some more research I'm told my best chances will be south of 64 near the Jicarilla Reservation in the Gas buggy area or way way north by Carracas Mesa. I checked my notes again, I geuss I still dont get what you were talking about backe, what's the sims side of Navajo lake?
