I'm putting an Allison into my van. There is about a 3.25" difference between the dipstick location of the 4L85E and the Allison. I can extend the tube and the dipstick to get everything to fit and seal, but I don't know where full/hot should be.

Any ideas?

take the original Allison tube and stick and see how far the dipstick sticks out the bottom when inserted. Measure and cut accordingly.

There is no normal Ally tube for a van. I doubt the truck tube would work in a van. The van tranny dipstick handle is next to the radiator.

Mike, my Ally was a pull-out at a salvage yard. No tube or dipstick included. I can buy one just to measure from, but it seems like a bit of a waste if someone has their trans pan off.

You still don't get it. You're not an engineer.
Measure the stock Allison tube and dipstick. Measure the length of the dipstick protruding from the bottom of the tube. There is your answer. Doesn't matter what tube you choose as long as the dipstick extends the same amount out the bottom.
Don't make me change your posting name to dufus.:D

Only issue is it seems like he might not have the stock Allison dipstick and tube to measure.

Ok, Ive had enough of the bickering back and forth without a solution, so I found my old 5-speed dipstick tube and the dipstick from my 5-speed donor trans. This is what I found:

Dipstick end is 6-1/2" from top lip of case seal. That seal lip is 1/8" tall outside the case.

From the END of the dipstick, the COLD reading is 1-15/16" to 3-1/16".

From the END of the dipstick, the HOT reading is 3-15/16" to 4-11/16".

I hope that helps you.

It'd have to be crazy long for a truck...I can't see the fan belt.

I looked at my 4L85e dipstick. It's totally different than what Tom posted. Looks like I'm buying a $42 dipstick. The factory rivets two dipsticks together for the tranny. Hopefully I can keep it to 2 pcs.

Another thought I had was to make a "stubby" and just check it under the doghouse. Not awesome, not horrible...
