So I'm moving to LA, California for work from South Florida, and I will be there for the next 3 years minimum. My DD in sig (Batmo S475 over stock and 40% Exergys) was built for Florida aka no emissions testing whatsoever. I do not plan on registering the truck in Cali, as I will be renting my house and retaining my Florida address.

Currently, the truck smokes pretty badly when getting on it hard or even when changing lanes if it lugs the RPM's down. Also, I have a light haze at stop lights. We are currently working on the tuning to limit the fuel in low RPM and until boost is built, but I'm wanting to know HOW STRICT are the po-po in Cali on people blowing smoke?? I do NOT do it belligerently or for shits-n-giggles (so chill, haters), but the truck does smoke pretty heavily until it builds some boost. Do you Cali guys think I will be ok with some tuning changes, or do I really have to consider going back to stock injectors, or even selling the truck? Thanks for any help!

In the San Diego area there are so many military people from out of state with out of state registration that they really don’t mess with anyone here. I see stacks and tuners everywhere. I go up to LA area a lot and never had a problem in my LBZ or my LML (H&S tuning is Smokey). I think as long as you’re not being a d*ck about it and driving like a a**hole you should be fine. If you can adjust tuning I would anyways though cause the wrong cop having a bad day....

i think u will be OK.. now if u drive around blowin smoke everywhere then u might be askin for it... there are a few drag strips in the L.A. area so when u feel the need u should beable to go do it at the track, ive been rollin with no smog for years and ive been cool... knock on wood!:D

Servicable DPF is an interesting idea. Sounds like its not as absolutely crazy strict as I had imagined. Thanks guys.

Here is the problem--

You may get stopped if the vehicle is smoking, and receive a summons. Then you will have to have the vehicle certified, and may even have to go to a Emission Referee. And show proof that it is repaired correctly. That will require that ALL the stock emission system is intact. I guarantee it will not be fun or cheap.

Yes, you may blow a lot of smoke, and not get stopped, but when [notice no "if"] you do, better have a reserve.

Welcome to So. Cal.

I suggest you try to reduce the smoking, and be careful.

The Highway Patrol are the worst for writing smoke tickets. If/When you get pulled over, be sure to keep your Florida Drivers License current and do not obtain a Calif License. Just say your on vacation and heading home the next week. Hopefully that will work

As long as you aren't stupid, and blow smoke everywhere, you should be ok. I've dealt with highway patrol and smoking, and as long as you are really nice to them, they seem to let you off the hook for smoking. I guess that depends what mood the cop is in that day, but i've gotten lucky :thumb:

They also do road side inspections, and not just for over the road trucks. Best to build a tune for daily driving and get that smoke down a lot! Try not to help Cali live up to its F-ing tree hugger shit-ball no tolerance reputation......Welcome
