c3 oilers

My LLY Trans woul hit 230 degrees pretty easy if I ran the truck hard in town. It would not cool off. If it got to 200, it stayed there. 215...stayed there as long as the truck was running....230 same thing. After installing the c3 oiler, my temps would slowly fall back down just under 200 degrees after the Trans got over 200. No matter how hot I got it, I could always get it back down under 200. I think they work great!:thumb:

I've noticed similar with mine, I also noticed it cools down quicker driving vs sitting idle in park. I'm glad this thread came about because the explanation of pressure at idle in the 04.5+ (I have an 06) makes a ton of sense as to why I see what I see and will help myself (and hopefully others) in the future.

I think the only reason it cools the fluid is because the fluid isn't being "used" ...if c3 is applied the fluid isn't entering the pack but when it disengages the hot fluid that just was used makes it through the oiler through more aluminum and airspace before being used again.

Basically what I'm saying is that if you want to spend money on cooling the fluid, you're money is more wisely spent on a better cooler with fans, or better fluid (quatrasyn) since the c3 oiler does cost some $$. This is all dependant on who built it and what pressure they have it set up to run too BTW. You can't expect a trans set up to run 310psi main line to stay cool cruising around town.

Mine did the same thing last summer, but the air was restricted pretty bad from my bumper, I cut a section out to kinda match the 11'+ trucks, and I got another hood and had the cowl cut on it, Highest I seen after that was 210* but still to hot for me, I'm adding a big cooler before summer hopefully it helps.

For the minimal investment to perform this debatable upgrade, I don't know why anyone wouldn't do either it or the Goerend mod (if the tranny is apart).

We put the Goerend set up on all our HP units along with Mikes spring and the usual goodies. Haven't had a C3 failure (or any other failure for that matter) yet...

My old LBZ still has the same tranny build in it for 5 years now. The tranny was built per Mike's specs for pressure and everything else. I believe that truck has as many 1/4 passes at over 600hp than 99.9% of the trucks running, as well as over 75,000 miles and still in use.

Mike's C3 oiler has been on it since the first day it went together. I believe in the product.

I ran Mike's Setrab LLY cooler, ATS pump kit and co pilot which is always set on the highest level on my lly. I only run Transynd fluid. It was a while ago when I checked, but my line psi was 260ish at cruise speeds...300+ at wot and higher rpm. Even stock, my LLY would not drop the temp. If it got hot it stayed that way until it was shut off. Building the Trans caused it to get hot much easier, so the cooler was added. That made it act more stockish with a built Trans. Once I added the c3 oiler, I was able to see a temp drop when it got hot. For the price and ease of install, I opted to add a c3 oiler instead of the upgraded cooler on a few of the builds I have done. I have not had any issues or need to add a cooler to those, but none of those trucks make the power my LLY does and none of those have a co pilot. I'd suspect higher Hp trucks would need the cooler added too.....or trucks strictly used for heavy hauling with elevated Hp levels. I'm sold on the c3 oiler and glad Mike introduced it!

Pretty good info in here. I've always been real curious on these and Goerend ones too. Wasn't sure if they were legit or not, my logic behind it was I've see lots of c3s cooked and the steels discolored so figured the extra cooling would help

Andrew, I didn't see if you posted this or not, but did you guys do testing with and without these on your newer stuff? I'm guessing by your responses that you did not see any difference or not enough to market them further.

It is a legitimate question, figured I'd point that out with all the back and forth between people.:thumb:

I know this thread kind of went to shit, but based on the original post I feel this question is still valid. Regardless of whether people thing you need a C3 oiler or not, how about opinions between the snake oiler and the Goerend PTO covers? I understand that one squirts and the other one just drains through a hole, but do they both accomplish the same thing overall? Or can you make the argument that the snake oiler is more effective by design?

Despite the chippy feel of this thread, I personally have enjoyed reading it and plan on these upgrades once my trans is ready for a rebuild. The debate and opinions are important for those on the sidelines to make up their own minds.
