Looking at picking up a lbz out of a burnt truck, any big negatives to doing this? Anything to look for? The guy said it turns over, I got stung the last time I bought an engine. Does it generally just burn the plastic and not wreck the other stuff?

I bought a LB7 that was burnt on the top and the only thing that was usable was the short block. Fire destroys every thing!!!

Did it melt the heads and fuel lines? I am mostly after the short block, buy if I have spare parts left over for an lly swap for my 01, I would be happy.

I bought 2 last year that were fire damage. 1 got burned down to the injector tops and valve covers down were good, and the other one had a valve cover burn up and drip down on the cp3. both long blocks were good

How much?

Cuz BigDmax05 (think that's his user name) is selling an LBZ engine and trans for like $3500...

And I just got a brand new GM LBZ long block with a 100k warranty (like it matters, lol) for $6400...

Food for thought

FWIW I've bought engines that were in various degrees of fires and the long blocks were usable every time (I think half dozen engines). An extremely overheated engine tends to be in worse shape internally in my experience, than one that had an external fire. The negative being the unusable top end parts you can't use from engines that were in a fire.

Cylinder damage from water sitting on it for extended periods of time seems to be the most common thing I've seen. I'm more scared of that than anything these days when buying engines. Either dry storage or a well sealed engine is good piece of mind.

Well talked to the guy today, said the top end looks fine, buy he said that it has a burn hole in the front of the oil pan. I am guessing it is from the atf in the transmissions cooler lines....any thoughts?

As long as it wasn't running while it was in flames I really wouldn't be scared of much at that price.
