How do you know what code reader to buy...??? Do "ALL" code readers work on every combustion engine......??? Are code readers specific to a given brand of vehicle or engine size....??

Sorry to be a PAIN.....but there are no towns near me, and everything needs to be ordered and shipped, and that works fine.....unless what was ordered is wrong and needs to be returned. Returning shipments here is expensive and difficult. Generally cheaper to just throw it away then return it.

So I really need to be clear about exactly what is needed.....

Sorry but I'll be an ass here.

You have a few threads going on and it's very clear you don't have a clue what you're doing. A diagnostic tool is only as good as the person using it. You'll be able to pull the codes but that probably won't be the entire problem.

For the price of a scanner you can probably have someone come check it out.

My guess is around $450.00 to $550.00 to have someone come and check it out. Is that really the cost of a functioning Code reader......??? I thought Code readers started at around $27.00 and you are not being an Ass, you likely have never been to rural Alaska. Round trip Anchorage to here and back to Anchorage is about 4 1/2 to 5 hours, then add in say 1/2 hour of troubleshooting time and you have 5 to 5 1/2 hours. And that assumes they could even get up the mountain to the truck.

Sorry that I have clearly become an annoyance, could you please suggest a different Forum, where I could seek assistance.

I was actually going to comment that you were likely in remote rural Alaska. I've been in remote parts of the world north of 60 and I know the problems associated with just getting supplies let alone someone there to fix a diesel truck.

The scanner posted at Summit will work for you. You won't be able to turn things on and off other than clear codes and it won't read abs codes but it will point you in the general direction of the source of the check engine light.

Ill try and help another Kodiak owner out, http://www.sicotool.com/best-qualit...r-gm-saab-opel-suzuki-isuzu-holden_p0057.html

This is supposed to work on our trucks, and should give you the most options for systems to check and maybe lead you down the correct repair road. Between using this and the internet you should have a pretty good idea what is going on.

I dont know if this is the one I purchased, but I do have a knock off Tech II. It works good for doing everything except uploading OS stuff to each of the modules. For what most folks need it for it allows you to have most of the functionality of the dealerships.

BTW, where are you at?

I'm not sure, but if that is what you want to do, you may be able to do that with EFI Live, but it will cost a license for each truck you reprogram. You need to talk to someone smarter than me about unlocking 6th gear. I have only played with the ECM's with EFI Live, never the TCM's.

Use an unlock box?

Come on now... The 4500 and 5500 trucks in 2006 and pretty sure 2007 were 6 speeds but had 6th gear locked out in the tcm. You could "unlock" the 6th gear with a tcm flash to get the final gear and lower rpms.

Haha I completely misunderstood the goal.
