Built trans?

I just picked up a 06 GMC 2500 lbz. Has 127000 miles on it. Is it worth to do a built trans on it? The motor is tuned and the tranny is also tuned with duramax tunes I believe. I did get the truck from a dealer and they let me have the previous owners number to contact and he has done some upgrades to it and said he was going to put a built trans in it but obviously didn't get to that point since I now own it.

What he put in was a Danville tuner, Danville 68mm stage 2 turbo, pro fab up pipes and a few others.

My main thing is this is a daily driver for me and will be towing a boat in the summer ranging in weight from 3000-4000lbs. I don't race at all or abuse the truck but want to do what's right.

Would it be easier to retune the engine to what I want (Idaho rob). Right now it's tuned at stock, 60, 80, 160 and 230

Thanks for any info

Yes! You have a turbo capable of 625hp. That's WAY too much for a stock trans. At your mileage on a 500hp tune, I'd bet you're only getting 425hp to the wheels. Due to trans slippage and tcm defueling to save trans. You will love a built trans.

After you build it, get Danville to redo your tunes for a built trans truck. (Right now they are no doubt "turned down"). I'd also reset the tcm tuning to stock.

Honestly (I'm not trying to start a tuner war) but if it's got Marks turbo on it, let mark tune it. Just my 2 cents

Welcome and nice truck btw

Any company you recommend on parts for it? I have a trans guy up here I trust with any vehicle. I will not touch a trans but will buy the parts for the trans shop to do it

I'll be the first to admit I don't know squat about trans. What would I need to do for this or is it a whole new trans

25 years is a long time but, how many of those were high performance ALLISON transmissions? It does matter because the Allison is not the same as a TH400. :thumb:

I'd call: Evan, Mike L, or Suncaost and have a trans built and shipped to you. No reason to chance this. That's my recommendation, you can't go wrong with any of those guys.

All depends on power goals. You can slap a gmax kit in it like most wanna be builders do. Or talk to the right people on here and get the best bang for the buck. I thought a Allison was simple and easy tell o talked with Evan after I lost my c3 clutches.

I will say I'm not going to do it myself or any cheap easy way. I want done right and I know y'all will know and give some great advise. Really I wanna have a trans built to what My truck is now in performance. Looking online I would prolly go with a stage 4 built trans. I don't plan on building the truck up anymore than what it is. Right now I believe I'm at 600 horse but don't quote me in that. I'm learning the Allison and duramax. All new to me. I traded in my ford and got tho truck...I'm sure I'll get praise for that lol... I'll definitely gives those guys a call. Sounds like they are very reputable and recommended by a lot of people.

I would have it built with your mods personally, and trust me man listen to these other guys when they tell you to go to someone who builds PERFORMANCE Allison for a living not just a normal Jo shmo Allison builder who has never done a performance build. Good friend of mine got ****ed by taking his truck to a trans builder who had been rebuilding transmissions for 20+ yrs to save a few bucks instead of going to a reputable performance builder. He limped it on the way home from picking it up and payed twice having to have a reputable guy fix it. Just friendly advise man, don't make a costly mistake that you didn't have to. Good luck

If your trans is not built you are not making 600!

Where in MN I am in MN and have a diesel specific shop that has built many performance Allisons including mine behind my drag truck. Hands down one of the best in the state.

Give Mike L a call and ask him about all the pressure springs he uses. I did the full gmax 5 kit in mine including the provided transgo kit springs... this summer I blew the p2 planetary and c2 hub and rebuilt the trans myself and got the latest and greatest Mike L springs from Street Diesel Solutions here in MI... the springs made a huge difference in smoothness of shifting. And x3 on having a reputable performance Allison builder do it. I had a shop in az do some experimentation on one trans for me and then do another one with the gmax kit in it. After pulling the last one he built for me apart, I realized he still did a few things wrong such as just throwing the c3 clutches in from the pack without properly trying to adjust it to the proper tolerance by switching out different thickness of steels and placing a few bearings in backwards that ended up scoring the face of my tail shaft that it mated to. I have been through 3 builds including some experimenting with different combinations of only modifying certain clutch packs and different pressure mods. Do yourself a favor and do a complete build and don't halfa$$ it, it's not fun having to pull the trans out multiple times...
I will not say the shops name that built/experimented with my first 2 trans builds or the contact person name out of respect for him, and because he did help me initially when I fried my stock trans bad and was in a pinch.

Also, thank you Mike L for the input and advise when I called you about the P0776 code and P2 planetary when I called over the summer. :thumb:

I'll look them up. And for sure we should. I am up that way a bit and a lot more lately.

When I do have the trans done I will give Danville a call or stop by cause I have family down there and would be on the way! I have called them before and they are very nice.
