I use scheaffers 7000 oil, about 7500 miles since i changed it. I was planning on changing it next weekend and just noticed the check oil light come on today. I checked it after letting it sit a few minutes to let the oil drain back down. Checked the level and didnt have anything show up onnthe dip stick! This is a recently built motor. Has no leaks atall, besides leaving an 1.5 " diameter spot over night from the pcv. Kinda nervous about this.

How many miles was the motor ran on conventional motor oil before switching to synthetic?

It think it was 200 or 250 on reg. and changed to more reg oil. After that I ran it hard right away for 1000 miles and changed to 7000 semi syn. i dont think i switched oils to soon. This is a semi synthetic, not full bore syn iirc. Its what ive always ran. And i put 2.5 quarts in just now to full it all the way up.

When is the last time you checked the oil level ben? Mine uses more than 2.5 quarts in 7500 miles.

Ill have to really watch this, i may have added a quart a few 1000 miles ago too?. On the 1000 miles i ran it hard right after building it was low 2 quarts. That was scary. So i think it did make sure and check it after that and put alittle in it. But i think its gotten better. So this 7500 mile interval maybe closer to 3.5 quarts. Ill really pay more attention and record data in the future.

Sounds about like mine..... ive still gotta do a compression test (wet and dry) and im gunna try swapping to a reg oil. I swapped to a full syn 500 miles into my build as well. Many many people say it should have no affect but i dont see it hurting anything to try it.

I didnt do anything the drivers bank. But all of my passengers side cylinders have 375 compression. I checked that side about 4000 miles ago cause my balance rates suck.

7500 miles, sorry

I would never go that long on oil in a built motor! Imho thats dumb. Second, knowing it has been burning oil why the hell would you wait so long to check it. A built engine depending on pistons, stuff done to heads, clearances, tolerances, buring 2qts of oil in 7,500 miles is ok in my book.

I figured the rings were leaking abit so i knew it would burn a bit at first. Just assumed it would have stopped by now. Ill just change oil sooner from now on.

X2, using a couple quarts between changes is probably fine. But a quart a week is another story. :spit:

And 7500mi? And why synthetic?

Glad im not alone on the distance thing 4000 is to long for me 3k on the dot for oil changes!

Also you just used cast pistons not forged right?

My bone stock LLY 5500 service truck burns at least 2 qts of oil in 7500 miles and 220 hours. I would never run it that long but its the employers truck and they won't change the oil until 250 hours. Total miles on that truck is 148,000. Again sounds normal. In my personal truck I go by how many races I put on it. I don't give a sheet if I only got 100 miles on the oil. Oils way cheaper then building a new engine. Now that I think about it. I have put 1,000 miles on my built engine and have changed the oil at least 4 times.

Save the money on oil and put it towards the next build. These motors don't last anyways and the bearings are the least of our concerns.
