there is a special pre-luber tool, but I never bothered; lubed the crap out of everything with moly assembly lube, and then pulled the FICM fuse, cranked it for 5-7 seconds, waited 10 seconds, cranked it again, waited, etc...

that did a perfect job priming it because when I took it apart 15,000 miles later the bearings looked better than any 'factory assembled' motor I have taken apart

That info is very good to know beforehand. :thumb: Thanks Ben. So I assume you just do the cranking procedure until you show pressure on the gauge, then you're good to go?

the instrument cluster powers down during cranking (as does everything else in the truck) to provide the starter with the most power possible...so its not going to indicate oil pressure while cranking.

The only way to monitor cranking oil pressure is with a mechanical gauge or with a Tech 2.

IF you can get a dmax pre-luber tool, definitely do it!!! I didnt have access to one so I just crossed my fingers and did it the above mentioned method and didnt have any problems. But like I said its not "recommended"

I have access to the preluber so i use that. As far as break in, When i had access to the dyno I'd fire them up, bump up the idle and let it come up to temp, check it all over while it cools down, strap it down, warm it up again while varying the throttle input till up to temp then load it a bit and set the cruise and let her go for awhile. Unstrap it after about 30 minutes of run time and let'er rip.
Now i just fire them off, bump up the idle, bring them up to temp, shut it off, check it over, and go for about a hour worth of normal cruising and ship it if it all checks out.
At Caterpillar we were always told not to let fresh engines run at normal idle rpms after first firing them. We just upped the idle a bit and never had any issues. Once we had broke them in a bit on the dyno though it was business as usual for them.

I know when we build our ATV race motors (4 stroke twin cylinders) we crank them and run them for about 10 min. running the motor from just above idle to 3/4 rev limit, up and down up and down. After that we drop the oil and then immediately start making WOT passes since it takes cylinder pressure to seat rings. I know my motors are on a much smaller scale but it is the same scenario. If you built the bottom end right then you don't have anythign to worry about, but it will take a few good WOT hot passes to seat the rings properly. Good luck!:thumb:

Ive been curious about this....just how do you pre-lube a Duramax? Is there some sort of pump to use, since there isnt a distributor shaft to spin?

Here's some pics Tom

Lol Tom if it's a part of a Duramax I think I have a pic of about anything lol. Pump is built into handle. You put 2 to 3qts of oil into the can after filling the oil filter and fill the oil pan. Take the oil line loose on top of the turbo and start pumping til oil comes out. Each stroke up and down moves oil it's built into the handle.

Thanks for all the suggestions fella's :thumb: Unfortunately it will be tomorrow before I get to start breaking the newly built motor in:( It seems like everything is taking 3 times as long as I thought:banghead: No real issues yet, just a ton of little odds and ends that accumulate into alot of extra time...

Mine is online now as of 11:50pm:thumb:. Started it 3 times and then decided it was time to go home. Still got some odds and ends to do and also got to chase a loose ground gremlin. Message came across dic battery is not charging. If it not once thing it is another. Hang in there custom8726,you will be smiling from one ear to another when it fires up.

Congrats! Have you checked the alternator charging wire?

I'm guessing my rings havent seated yet because im going through oil like crazy and its not on the ground. during the day i cant tell if white smoke is coming out the exhaust or not but at night when lights are shining behind me i can see a haze! no black at all because im only running 15k psi rail pressure!

I sure hope that your rings have seated in 250,000 miles...i would say that you have other problems...like you need to rebuild your motor and get new injectors.

Variable throttle for 500miles, is what I did. The first time we built it. The second time, after the piston cracked, I pulled it the next day and won.
