Today we started to convert Casper into a Land Speed Racing truck. Step one was remove the entire dash and most the interior to fit it for a SCTA/Bonneville legal rollcage, and we want it to be NHRA legal as well.

Mitch Howe of Mitch's Custom Fabrication in El Monte (626) 442-2100 is doing the rollcage. He has worked with several LSR cars and bikes and is a LSR racer himself.

Greg (StewieTuned) stopped by and helped a bunch with removing the dash and etc. Thanks Greg!

Greg took some pictures, hopefully he can post them up.

Uh... Greg? I thought your name was Stewie. :D Sorry! :hello:

Out of all my hotrodding days, that dashboard is so far the most complex piece of automotive engineering I've seen with my eyes. There are several hundred different parts and wires.

Interesting is that they had a horz 2 in sq "crash bar" located there. My guess is it was needed to support the passenger side airbag deployment.

Yes thats to support the airbag, as well as to control buckling of the dash in a crash; so the dash does not "come off" and tilt up. Also something to keep the steering wheel located.

Pat once the cage goes in is the dash going back on like "stock"??

I hope the answer is yes...

I think it would be a real hoot to see casper go land speed record racing 170mph across teh salt flats, all the while with the bose stereo cranked, digital climate control set at a comfy 72*, and you talking to Kat on the onstar phone. :D

well I think this will shut up all the nay sayers and paranoid goof balls who think onstar is spying on us and mailing us speeding tickets when it sees us going over X mph. If pat goes land speed racing and doesnt get any surprises in the mail, then I think we're all safe.

We will try and replace everything we can, but the truth is, the safety requirement trumps the creature comforts.

When this is done, you will understand. This is going to be built to survive a 200+ MPH rollover while engulfed in flames. I will have 2 flame-out systems, a parachute, and be wearing funny car firesuit.

The seat is all aluminum with no padding, I will have arm restraits, leg restraits, and helmet restraints.

This is the MINIMUM requirement. Yeeee Hawwww!~!

From racing open bodied drag cars ARM RESTRAINTS SUCK. I couldn't even buckle myself in, but could hit the release and get out.

so what suit did you get -10 or higher?

I strap my dad in the pro-mod, way to hard for him to do it, too cramped. When we tightened him in, we cinched the belts till it hurt,....and then a little more! Loose belts kill! He has the whole sha-bang, nomex underwear, T/F rated fire suit, SFI shoes, gloves, neck brace, helmet aluminum boot covers, all of it! And that stuff will bake you so he also wears a cool vest under the suit.

On the seat... I sugjust a nice padded Kirkey, looks good too, we have one in our car.

True that! also X2 an a padded Kirky, even a good circle track one (lightweight and padded as best as possible).

Racing dirt track, at the big fast tracks I'd have help strapping in, screw driver in the end of each belt strap and a buddy would put is foot on it and give it a good jump, gotta get those suckers tight for when your car goes cart wheeling thru the air. also knee pads with shin guards worked well too (like what a baseball catcher wears). I love arm restraints, way better than a window net imo. Also, being its a truck and a big cab area, look into a good size halon ststem.
