I've got a Gen V 454 torn completely down and gathering parts to rebuild it. It's a 4 bolt main, 1 piece rear seal, factory forged crank, dimple rods, 088 rectangle port heads. It's a standard bore block @ 4.250", stock stroke @ 4.000". I need new Pistons, intake, cam, lifters, springs. I'm thinking of a XE268 comp grind has anyone had any experience with that cam? I don't know much about cam specs. Also thinking about an edelbroc rpm air gap intake and for Pistons, some domes to get me around 9.5:1-10:1. The vehicle is a 96 GMC rcsb 4x4 on 1 ton axles and 38's, it is mostly a toy and plays offroad a lot but I do drive it on the street too. I'm looking to build it on a budget so I will be reusing the block, crank, rods, and heads.

I know you have a forged crank already but take a close look at some of the balanced rotating assemblies out there. Some good stroker assemblies out there at good prices, 496cid is a great power house.

I would love to throw an Eagle rotating assembly in it to turn it into a 496, just can't justify it this go around, maybe next time! This is round 3 for me and this engine, first 2 times it had a supercharger sittin on top. I'm over that chit!! Nothin but a headache!!

Is 10:1 really that low?? I'm just reusing what I already have. It's a budget build, I don't wanna change everything, just the Pistons and cam

I think for going into a truck and using a mild cam and low compression I would use some 781 oval ports on it rather than the square ports.

Good advice. Your giving up a lot of port velocity with the big rectangle ports. Big block oval port heads flow really well and perform better on the street. All the big block heads respond very well to Manley's Proflo valves, with the necked down steams too.

If I had the money to blow it would be a 496 with different heads but.... It is what it is. It'll run.

Haha yeah, I dream big a lot. Just dumped a bunch of money in my LB7 and this truck is just a toy. The way I treat it, it will be tore up eventually so I don't wanna spend more than I have to.

I have run the Comp 4x4 extreme cams before in my BB chevy 84. They are great cams and cater more to the requirements of a heavy 4-wheel drive truck, better vacuum, better torque in lower rpm ranges etc. Now for your 88's they are great head and can make serious power for old school cast iron. But they like to make there power in the upper rpms which means you need a cam and springs that will allow you to get to the sweet spot for these heads, a touch over 6,000+ rpm. This comp cam falls right in that range...

I'm running the next size down in a 415 BB chevy with Oval vette 427 heads. Nice lopy idle but makes power right out of the hole. The above cam and your heads will be a touch doggier off idle but hold on when you hit 2k:D

As for pistons your going to want to look at flat tops in the 9.5-10.1 range. Closed port 88's with domes will put you well over 10.1 probably closer to 11.1 IIRC. 10.1 with the older cast iron heads can cause detonation issues... Not sure if you want to be buying good fuel all the time or not? What pistons are in it, flat or dome? Why do they need replaced?

The heads are open chamber 118 cc, the flat tops that were in it were only around 8:1. I'm wanting to go to about a 22cc dome to get me 9.5:1-10:1

That's the one I was looking at, what do you think Burn Down?? I don't wanna get too big of a cam for my convertor, it's supposed to be 1800-2000 stall. If you think the one you showed me is better then I'm all for it! Like I said, cam specs are over my head! I did use the cam quest 6 software to come up with my choice though.

I am doing about the same build with a mark VI. Crank is tore up so stroking is my best choice.not that i want to use them but what rep do the vortec heads have?

454 vortec heads are pretty much junk I think. But lucky you to have a VI block you can bolt old school parts right on it!! My rods have been honed out for floating wrist pins so I have to use that style of piston.
