Broke something in the front drivetrain

Well we got down to the NHRA Div 6 finals in Woodburn Or. and first run of the day broke something in either the transfer case or front differential. The truck launched and then you can hear something break, the truck spun the rears for a hundred feet or so and almost went into the wall. It makes noise in four wheel drive and when switched out pretty much goes away, we were able to make the 6 hour drive home. I am thinking it is the front differential because it will drive when not in 4x4, any advice on trouble shooting to figure it out would be appreciated.

I wonder if you grenaded the front diff disconnect. I've seen a few of those blown up. Especially if it wasn't fully engaged before you launched.

That is a possibility two weeks ago at the track we went to leave and the 4x4 was still engaged but had been switched out of 4x4, I had to put it back into 4x4 and out and it disengaged. I wonder if we bent the forks and then it was not fully engaging. I got it up on jack stands and in 4x4 the front drive line is locked with the transfer case but the front wheels will turn with noise coming from the front differential.

Yep, you killed it. I'm glad you found it was the front diff and not the Tcase, but sad it'll cost you some decent $$.

Just dont be putting the truck into 4x4 at the last minute before your run anymore, ok? Let the truck fully engage first.

By the time I'm in the staging lanes I'm in 4x4, just to be sure haha. Let us know what you find. I've seen stock high mileage trucks with drain plugs that look like that. Hope it's something simple and cheap.

yep thats how mine was all 3 times. got to the point of it destroying the inside of my housing. Check the rubber mounts for the front diff. A lot of times they get loose from a lot of launching
