LBZ: breakin Oil ?

What Oil you guys using to breakin a new motor my friend just got a new motor from Socal they suggest Torco I think is what he told me?

I used the cheapest 15-40 I could find, usually Rotella. I ran that oil for about 5 minutes after it got to operating temp, and then changed it.

The zinc isn't really as necessary on our engines since we have roller lifters. It is more critical on a flat tappet style lifter like an old small block or a Cummins. Without a zinc additive it is easy to flatten the lobes on the cam without the extra cushioning it provides. It's still not a bad idea, but I've never really worried too much about it on a Duramax.

I don't plan on using it this time. But when I first built it with a new cam I used alittle bottle. Most places won't have it, parts store wise, I just got lucky. I used Lucas I believe.

My engine builder told me to break in with Delo 400 then i switch to Schaeffers.

X2 zinc additive mainly for non roller applications. Won't hurt to put it in but isn't really necessary.

x2 on joe gibbs although to break in the cam on my sisters Jetta I didn't have any around so I just used non detergent straight 30w and a bottle of lucas zinc additive because its what I could find. The PD TDI's are SOHC with flat lifters.
