The question I have is why wouldnt you do everything possible to prolong the life of an expensive built engine? If its being low on cash just wait, save up for another few months and do it rite the first time. If you build for a goal of 450-600 you are always going to be limited to that... OVERBUILD now so you can grow if your power needs go up.. To me, boring, honeing, balancing, main studs, head studs, keying cam and crank should be on everyones list.. I kno boring isnt ness. but why not start with a brand new bore when your at the machine shop anyways?

So what happens when you break a crank 2 weeks after your over built engine is running?

Its a chance we all take when building these motors. I hear of all these cranks breaking lately and everyones at diff power levels. It seems to me its hit or miss. And im not saying you HAVE to do all that, but is it a good idea to do it if it gives your motor a chance to last longer, hell yes it is.

I'm in the same boat a Dale... Except there isn't anyone up here in Alaska that even has a torque plate. So If I want it done this winter, I will have to buy one and hope the machine shop up here can handle it, or ship my block and rotating assembly to the states...

We need to have a chat. I have been thinking of getting one from Guy for when I do mine....

I agree with most of that... But I have never tried any of these things so my opinion doesn't really hold water and I keep it to myself.

And how do you know it's going to prolong anything? Plenty of high dollar builds didn't last any longer and sometimes less than budget builds.

My point is it's your money spend it on the best you can afford be as informed as you can.

I will more than likely have to ship my short block to the lower 48 for machine work if I want all of the above done. Which is my intention but I have toyed with buying a torque plate and giving my local shop a shot.

If you cracked a piston you'll more than likely need an overbore.

I highly doubt it's a cracked piston. No oil out the crankcase vent, dipstick never blew out either. Oil pressure was good right until it stalled.
I'm not using this block anyways, I have a shortblock in the states I will be using.

Curtis @ DPS? in Calgary has one. Might be cheaper to ship there rather than to the lower 48.
I wasn't in a hurry to get my shortblock done either and now I'm scrambling. I figured a two year plan was enough time. Turns out I over estimated my engine life by 6 months lol. I always figured a piston would go before a crank.

Shipping it to Calgary would be even more I think, duty taxes, customs...? I could bring it down, But I will have to check with the wife and see if she paid my speeding ticket in Beaverlodge? I could be a wanted man in Alberta:D By the way your mountys have no sense of humor.

No they don't.
I wouldn't worry about the ticket. I have about 5 I never paid in BC and never heard anything about it. And I have never heard of warrant's being arrested for speeding tickets anywhere in this country.

You would only have to pay 5% GST to DPS as Alberta doesn't have a provincial sales tax.
Duty and stuff would be payable to your government-not sure how much that would be on 10g but I know I would get raped bringing it into Canada.

Lol, he made it sound like I would be on beaverlodges most wanted if I didn't get it paid... I was half way through my subway before they finally got caught up to me:eek: I looked out the window and they had my truck surrounded...

Anywho I'll do some research on the cost, may be the best way to go to get all the "must have stuff done":D

You or Simon mind if I sleep in your driveway, Ted didn't lol.

Keep in mind Curtis has his own company, Extreme Engine Development is the name, he rents the other side of DPS from Kevin so its two different buisnesses. If you guys need any contact info for Curtis let me know, I say goodmorning to him everyday.
